Sloppy Seventh Inning Costs Jets in 10-3 Loss

WICHITA – The Newman baseball team could not hold onto a 3-2 lead after No. 7 Emporia State scored six runs in the top of the seventh, and picked up a 10-3 win over the Jets Tuesday afternoon at McCarthy Field.

It was a scoreless game until the top of the third when John Kornbrust started the Emporia State (2-0) half of the inning with a single through the left side. Kornbrust stole second as Beau Poston struck out, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. ESU's next batter, Andy Cotton grounded out to second base, and allowed Kornbrust to come in for the game's first run. Newman (3-8) could not answer, and Emporia led 1-0 going into the bottom of the third.

The Jets tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. The inning began with a Corey Cowan single to left field. Scott Palmer walked, advancing Cowan to second. Recognizing Newman was in scoring position, Ryan Engrav singled up the middle to bring Cowan in for the only run of the inning.

Emporia started the fifth inning with a Poston single up the middle while Andy Cotton followed with another single up the middle. Jacob White laid down a bunt, but the Jets threw for the force out at third. Newman threw White out at second on the next play, Hornets on first and third base. Cotton scored from third on a Newman error giving Emporia the lead, 2-1.

Newman returned in the bottom of the fifth with two runs giving the Jets a 3-1 advantage. A Mike Williams single followed by John Bonebrake reaching on an error broke ground for the Jets to start something. Jacob Gaul put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Williams to third and Bonebrake to second. The bases were loaded after Longmore was walked. Cowan was then hit by a pitch bringing Williams in for a run, and still leaving the bases loaded. The final run came from Bonebrake when Palmer hit a sacrifice fly-ball to right field.

Emporia ran away with the game scoring six runs in the seventh inning, and two runs in the eighth. At the start of the seventh White reach second on a Newman throwing error while Dillon Hazlett walked. Joe Vaskas brought White and Hazlett in for Hornet runs by hitting a double to left-center. Kyle Rosine then pinch ran for Vaskas. A Travis Whipple sacrifice bunt advanced Rosine to third. Rosine then scored on a wild pitch. After a Newman pitching change, David Albritton doubled then stole third. A Kevin Wempe single drove in another Hornet run.

White and Hazlett were the eighth-inning runs for Emporia, both singled and stole. White scored on a Newman throwing error, while Hazlett was batted in by Whipple.The Hornets beat the Jets, 10-3.

Corey Cowan went one for two at the plate, and had one RBI and one run. Jacob Furr started the game for the Jets pitching three innings and allowing just one run and two hits.

The loss against Emporia State brings Newman's record to 3-8. The Jets continue play this weekend at Laredo, Texas against conference opponent Texas A&M International beginning with a doubleheader on Friday.
