WICHITA - The Newman baseball team scored six runs over the final five innings, and rallied for a 6-4 come-from-behind win over Northwest Missouri State Tuesday afternoon at McCarthy Field. Ashton Hoffman held the Bearcat bats at bay on the way to his first win of the season.
After two scoreless innings, Northwest Missouri State (0-5) opened the scoring in the third inning, tagging Newman (4-11) starter
Logan Clewes for four runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead after three innings of play. The Jets countered in their half of the fifth. Corey Cowan opened the inning with a double down the left field line to break up Bearcat starter Kenny Brengle's no-hitter.
Mike Williams followed with a single to shortstop that advanced Cowan to third.
Brett Delcambre then grounded out to shortstop, but it allowed Cowan to plate Newman's first run of the game. Williams added a run when
Cody Miller reached on a fielding error by the Bearcat third baseman, leaving the Jets with a two-run, 4-2, deficit after five innings.
Newman took control of the game in the seventh. A Delcambre double, followed by a Miller single put runners on the corners for Newman with just one out. A ground out by
John Bonebrake allowed Delcambre to score, while
Kyle Burkhardt, who pinch ran for Miller, scored on a wild pitch. With the game tied, Jake Gaul walked, then advanced to third on a David Longmore single through the right side before scoring when Jordan Ollenberger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Jets a 5-4 lead after seven innings of play.
The Jets added an insurance run in the eighth, and it came at the hands of Williams. The senior singled to third to open the inning, then advanced to third when Delcambre reached on an error. Williams went on to score on a fielder's choice from Bonebrake to give Newman the 6-4 advantage it went on to win by.
Mike Williams finished 2-for-4 in the contest, scoring two runs in the process to lead the Jets. Ashton Hoffman picked up the win for the Jets, throwing five complete scoreless innings while recording two strike outs. Griffin Campbell earned his first save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four.
With the win, the Jets improve to 4-11 on the season. They will return to action Friday, hosting Texas-Permian Basin in a double-header beginning at 4 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
