WICHITA -
Mike Williams notched six hits, five runs, and four RBI as the Newman baseball team swept a doublheader from Arkansas-Fort Smith Friday afternoon at McCarthy Field. Newman cruised to an 11-5 win in the opener before rallying for a 10-9, 10-inning win in the nightcap.
Game 1: Newman 11, UAFS 5
Newman (8-14) made the first move in the contest, using Ryan Engrav's long ball to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Jets went on to take complete control of the game in the fourth inning.
Mike Williams' single to center was the first of back-to-back singles to open the frame. Engrav followed with a walk before the Jets put together two more singles. When the dust settled, the Jets had scored six runs to take a 7-0 lead, and had forced Arkansas-Fort Smith (9-9) starter Taylor Shaddy out of the contest.
The Lions countered with four runs on three hits and two Newman errors, and clawed back to within three, 7-4, after five innings. UAFS added another run in the sixth to pull within two, 7-5, but a four-run sixth inning separated the Jets from the Lions and gave the hosts the 11-5 win.
Mike Williams finished the game with a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate, adding two runs and an RBI in the process. Newman starter
Kyle Burkhardt earned his third win of the season, giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits with five strike-outs and two walks in six innings of work.
Game 2: Newman 10, UAFS 9 (10 Innings)
Riding its momentum from the first game, Newman (9-14) opened the nightcap with a three-run first inning. David Longmore opened the inning with a single to left, then scored on a Williams double to left. Williams came around to score on
Dale Steele's single to left, which also scored
Scot Palmer, who reached base when he was hit by a pitch. After the opening inning, Newman held a 3-0 lead.
Arkansas-Fort Smith (9-10) answered with three runs of its own in the top of the second, sending the game into the third inning knotted at 3-3.
The Lions took their first lead of the game in the fourth, scoring two runs on one hit and two Newman errors to take a 5-3 lead. Newman answered with a run of its own when
Brett Delcambre, who doubled to open the inning, scored on
John Bonebrake's ground-out to third, and pulled the Jets back to within one, 5-4, after four innings.
UAFS added two more runs in the sixth, and a single run in the seventh to take an 8-4 lead, but again Williams and the Jets were up to the task. After watching David Longmore send a single to right to open the bottom of the seventh,
Mike Williams lofted a pitch into the stiff south breeze and over the left-field fence. The Jets added another run when Jake Gaul, who ran for
Dale Steele, scored on a Delcambre double. After seven innings, Newman was back to within one, 8-7.
The Lions scored what they thought would be an insurance run in the ninth, and took a 9-7 lead into Newman's final scheduled at-bat. Again, Newman had an answer.
Scot Palmer opened the inning with a single to left, then advanced all the way to third on a
Thomas Robulack single. Back-to-back walks allowed Palmer to score from third. Robulack scored on the Jets' next at-bat when
John Bonebrake notched a fielder's choice, and forced extra innings with the game knotted at 9-9.
In relief of
Eric Hansen, Gage Daniels retired the Lions in order in the top of the 10th, giving the Jets an opportunity to win the game in their half of the first extra frame. And again, Williams was in the middle of the action. Williams singled to left, then moved to second on a Palmer single to center. A Robulack single to left was enough to send Williams home, and gave the Jets the 10-9 win in 10-innings.
Williams finished Friday's second game with a 3-for-6 outing, adding three runs and three RBI in the process to lead the Jets.
Daniels was credited with the win, throwing one inning of scoreless baseball.
With the sweep, the Jets improve to 9-14 on the season. They will conclude the series Saturday, hosting the Lions for one game beginning at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
