Box Score MARYVILLE, Mo. - Winds gusting above 40 mph and a red-hot Northwest Missouri State squad spelled disaster for the Newman baseball team, which dropped a 19-6 decision to the Bearcats Wednesday afternoon at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo. The two teams combined for 33 hits and four errors in the contest.
Northwest Missouri State (5-13) went straight to work in the first inning, tagging Newman starter
Mike Williams for five runs on five hits to take an early 5-0 lead. The Bearcats added two more runs in the second to take a 7-0 lead into the third inning.
Newman (11-14) started to erase their deficit in the third inning. Jake Gaul walked to open the frame, then moved to second on a Corey Cowan single to center field. A David Longmore double down the left field line allowed Gaul to score from second, and moved Cowan to third. Cowan went on to score on a
Mike Williams sacrifice fly to right field. Longmore advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a Ryan Engrav sacrifice fly to right field. By the middle of the third, the Jets had pulled to within four, and trailed 7-3.
The Bearcats picked up where they left off in their half of the third inning, adding a single run in the frame before adding three more in the fourth, then tacking eight more on the board in the bottom of the fifth to give the hosts a 19-3 lead heading into the sixth.
The offense finally slowed down in the sixth and seventh innings, as neither team could find a way to score. Newman finally broke that ice in the eighth, when
Scot Palmer doubled to center field, then scored on a
Brett Delcambre double to right center. The Jets added two more runs on two hits in their half of the ninth, but came up well short of the runs they needed, falling 19-6 to the Bearcats.
David Longmore was Newman's productive bat in the game, finishing 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
Mike Williams was tagged with his first loss of the season, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits in just one inning of work.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 11-15 on the season. They will return to action Friday, resuming Heartland Conference play by hosting 13th-ranked St. Mary's. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
