WICHITA – The Newman baseball team stole a home series from Texas-Permian Basin, taking two of three games from the Falcons this weekend at McCarthy Field. The Jets came back for the win in the first game on Friday, 6-5; the Falcons ousted the Jets 11-7 in the second game. In the final game of the series on Saturday, the Jets' 19 hits led to a 15-5 victory.
Newman 6, Texas-Permian Basin 5
Newman (7-11, 5-10 Heartland) started things off quickly in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on one hit. The first two batters for Newman reached base when they were hit by pitches. A
Mike Williams walk loaded the bases for
Thomas Robulack, who doubled down the right-field line scoring all three runners. At the end of the first, Newman led 3-0.
Texas-Permian Basin (6-11, 4-8 HC) returned in the second and fourth innings with two runs each, and an additional run in the fifth to overcome the Jets' lead, 5-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Williams, the leadoff batter, singled to right field then advanced on a
Scot Palmer single. Robulack laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. UTPB decided it was time for a pitching change with Jets on second and third.
Brett Delcambre welcomed UTPB's Ryan Escarcega to the mound, reaching first on a fielding error which brought Williams home. Bases were loaded after
John Bonebrake walked, then
Dale Steele, who pinch hit for Jake Gaul, reached base on a throwing error, allowing two more runs for the Jets. After the inning, the Jets led 6-5.
UTPB tied the score at 6-6 in the top of the seventh.
Newman just needed one run to win the game, and the Jets didn't hold back. Cowan opened the inning with a single, then scored the game-winning run on an RBI double from
Mike Williams. With pitcher
Patrick Redlin for the win and Williams' three-for-three at the plate, the Jets won the game, 7-6
Texas-Permian Basin 11, Newman 7
The Falcons opened the game with three runs in the second inning, and one run each in the fourth and fifth-inning taking the big lead, 5-0.
The pitching for UTPB started to started to fall apart in the bottom of the fifth. Four straight walks scored a run and kept the bases loaded for Newman. Two more runs scored on a Cowan single. Another Jet scored off a UTPB error, bringing the Jets to within one run, 5-4, with one out and two Jets on base. Cowan was able to score on sacrifice fly from Robulack, tying the game at 5-5 heading into the sixth inning.
UTPB took the lead again after a three run inning in the sixth making the score, 8-5.
Jordan Ollenberger opened the bottom of the sixth innin with a single. A Delcambre walk, followed by a David Longmore single to right field allowed Ollenberger to score. Two consecutive walks scored another run for the Jets, and brought Newman back to within one, 8-7, heading to the seventh inning.
That was all the Jets had left in them as a run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth from the Falcons gave UPTB the 11-7 win.
Newman 15, Texas-Permian Basin 5
Newman broke out the bats in the final game of the series, leading the Jets to 15-5 run-rule victory. The Jet's leadoff batter, Bonebrake, singled, then advanced to third on a Longmore single to left field. Longmore stole second to give the Jets two runners in scoring position. A single through the right side from Engrav and a ground out from Palmer brought the two runners in to give Newman a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Jets drove the lead up to 6-0 in the second inning. Ollenberger, Gaul, and Bonebrake started it all with singles. Ollenberger was picked off on Bonebrake's single, but Gaul was driven home by Cowan. With two on base and Williams at bat, Williams hit a three run homerun over right field.
The Falcons were the next to score in the top of the fourth, closing the lead to 6-4. UTPB scored another run in the top of the eighth, but it wasn't enough to pose a serious threat to Newman's hot bats.
Six runs off four hits and one error gave Newman a comfortable cushion after the fourth inning. The runs came from Longmore, Bonebrake, Engrav, Cowan, Palmer, and Delcambre. The Jets would go onto score a run in the sixth; two runs in the bottom of the eighth to run-rule the Falcons, 15-5.
Gage Daniels received the win pitching a little over six innings.
The 2-1 weekend improves the Jets overall record 7-11 with a 5-10 record in Heartland play. Newman will return to action on Friday, March 11 in Lawton, Okla. facing the Cameron Aggies.
