Two-Out Rallies Blast Jets Past Swedes in Run Rule

WICHITA – Cool weather did not affect the Newman baseball team as they beat Bethany 10-0 in seven innings at McCarthy Field on Tuesday evening. The Jets' defense held the Swedes to a scoreless game while 10 Newman hits and two Bethany errors gave way to the run rule.

Neither Newman (21-20) nor Bethany (13-31) scored until the bottom of the fifth. Brett Delcambre started the two out rally with a single. Next, Jordan Ollenberger hit a single to centerfield where Bethany's Evan Erickson mis-played the baseball, and allowed Delcambre to score and Ollenberger to advance to second. A left field single by John Bonebrake brought Ollenberger in for another Jet run. Stealing second put Bonebrake in scoring position for Jacob Gaul to bring him home off a single to the outfield to give the Jets a 3-0 lead.

Newman's David Longmore was hit by a pitch to start the sixth inning. Longmore easily reached third on a Mike Williams double to right field, and advanced home on the throw in from the outfield. A Ryan Engrav groundout moved Williams to third putting him in position to score on a wild pitch. After two consecutive scoring innings, the Jets still held the lead, 5-0.

To end the game with a run rule, the Jets needed five more runs. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Gaul doubled to left field. A single up the middle by Corey Cowan brought Gaul in for the first run of the inning. A fielding error by Bethany's Evan Bloem allowed Longmore to reach first and Cowan to move to second. Cowan was able to score while Longmore advanced to third on a Williams single to right field; Williams advanced to second on the throw. An Engrav single to a center field gap scored both Longmore and Williams producing the third and fourth runs of the inning. Newman only needed one more run to reach a run rule victory. A wild pitch allowed Engrav to advance to second followed by a walk for Dale Steele. Pinch hitting for the Jets was Jeff Oldenberg. Oldenberg singled through the right side, scoring Engrav for the win over the Swedes, 10-0 in seven innings.

Blake Gosch pitched three innings with four hits to receive the win. Gosch had help on the mound from starter Eric Hansen who pitched three innings-allowing three hits, and finishing the game was Logan Clewes.

The weekday win gives Newman a 21-20 record. The Jets travel to Odessa, Texas on Friday, for the weekend series against conference opponent Texas-Permian Basin. Newman can secure a bid in the 2011 Heartland Conference Championship tournament with a sweep of the Falcons.
