WICHITA - The Newman baseball team opened its weekend series against Central Oklahoma with a 14-9 come back win. During the game, there were two ties and six lead changes, but the eight-run inning in the bottom of the eighth gave the Jets the final rein.
Central Oklahoma (22-23) scored two runs in the top of the third off a Newman (22-23) error. The Jets followed with one run. David Longmore walked, then advanced to second on a
Mike Williams single. A
Scot Palmer single brought Longmore home for the only run of the inning, giving the Bronchos a 2-1 lead after the third inning.
John Bonebrake started things off for the Jets in the fourth with a single to leftfield, and then advanced to second on a Chris Muchmore wild pitch. A walk for Jacob Gaul put two Jets on base as a passed ball moved both into scoring position. Longmore advanced Bonebrake home and Gaul to third with a single. A double to left-center from Williams scored the final two runs of the inning, moving the Jets into the lead, 4-2.
The Bronchos had a Keegan Morrow triple and Tyler Hancock double in the top of the fifth helping Central Oklahoma score two runs of three hits, tying the game, 4-4.
Newman's Palmer led off in the fifth with a homerun over the leftfield fence for the only run of the fifth inning. The Jets took the lead again, 5-4.
Three hits, two runs, and one Newman error gave Central Oklahoma the 6-5 lead in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, there were two outs after Bonebrake reached first on a fielder's choice. Bonebrake stole second, advanced to third on a Gaul single, and scored off a throwing error by the Bronchos' catcher. With the unearned run, the Jets tied the game, 6-6.
Central Oklahoma took over the reins in the top of the eighth scoring three runs off four hits and a Newman error. Going into the bottom of the eighth the Bronchos led, 9-6.
The Bronchos pitching helped Newman regain the lead. It started with Longmore getting hit by an Aaron Rosborough pitch, and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Engrav doubled to left field scoring Longmore. Next up, Palmer reached first on a Kevin Blue throwing error, while Palmer was headed for second Engrav reached third and looked towards home as the firstbaseman Tyler Hancock attempted to throw the ball home, instead the throw went into the stands. The second throwing error allowed Engrav to reach home and Palmer to move to third.
Jeff Oldenberg came in to pitch run for Palmer. A
Thomas Robulack sacrifice fly to centerfield let Oldenberg tag-up for the Jet's third run of the inning. There were two outs as
Brett Delcambre singled to second, and Bonebrake singled to the shortstop.
Dale Steele pinch hit for Gaul; Steele reached first on a Rosborough walk loading the bases for Newman.
Brock Helfrich then came in to pinch run for Steele. A second consecutive walk put Cory Cowan on first as Delcambre came in for another run. A Rosborough wild pitch scored Bonebrake, as Helfrich moved to third and Cowan to second. Longmore loaded the bases with a Rosborough walk. A Williams single up the middle brought Helfrich and Cowan home, and moved Longmore to third. Engrav singled down the right-field line, allowing Longmore to be the last Newman run of the inning.
Central Oklahoma could not overcome Newman's eight-run inning. The Jets won with the 14-9 come back. Jacob Furr received the win for the Jets, allowing one run off three hits in two innings with two big strikeouts in the top of the ninth (four strikeouts overall). Williams was four-for-six at the plate, Engrav three-for-six, and Robulack two-for-three as Longmore scored four runs and Bonebrake with three runs.
