WICHITA - The final two games of the 2011 home schedule are ones that the Newman baseball team will not remember fondly, as Central Oklahoma swept the Jets in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at McCarthy Field. The Bronchos opened with a 7-5 win in the opener, then concluded the season with a 13-2 win in the finale.
Game 1 - Central Oklahoma 7, Newman 5
Newman (22-24) found itself in a pitcher's duel over the first three innings, but the Jets broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning.
Thomas Robulack opened the inning with a single through the left side, stole second, then took advantage of a Corey Cowan double to plate himself, along with
Jeff Oldenberg, who was hit by a pitch in his at-bat.
John Bonebrake cashed Cowan in with a double of his own to give the Jets a 3-0 lead after four innings.
The Jets added another run in the fifth inning. With one out,
Scot Palmer reached on a fielding error at third base, then was replaced with pinch-runner David Longmore, who made the most of Palmer's efforts by scoring on a
Brett Delcambre single to right-center. The run pushed Newman's advantage to 4-0 after five innings.
When the Central Oklahoma (23-23) bats finally woke up, they did so in a big way. The Bronchos made their deficit up almost immediately with a three-run sixth inning that cut the Newman lead to 4-3.
Newman dded another run in the sixth when
Mike Williams was intentionally walked, then moved to second on a fielding error at shortstop before scoring on a bases-loaded walk from Robulack to push the Jets' lead to 5-3.
UCO got the last laugh, however. The Bronchos scored two runs in each of the final two innings and held the Jets at bay on their way to the 7-5 win.
Mike Williams led the Jets with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate and scoring one of Newman's five runs, while
Thomas Robulack finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Gage Daniels was saddled with the loss in the contes, giving up two earned runs on three hits in one inning of work. Starter Brandon Droge gave up three runs on three hits in six innings of work.
Game 2 - Central Oklahoma 13, Newman 2
Central Oklahoma (24-23) forced Newman (22-25) to play from behind from the opening inning. The Bronchos followed a two-run first inning with a four-run second inning to take a 6-0 lead after two at-bats.
The Jets struggled to answer UCO's early outburst. Newman scored a run in the second when David Longmore, who opened the inning with a single through the left side, scored on a
Dale Steele single up the middle. Newman added another run in the third when
Mike Williams doubled down the right field line, then scored on a Ryan Engrav single to right. After three, the Jets had cut the UCO lead to 6-2.
But the Bronchos were far from satisfied. UCO scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, and added another in the sixth on their way to the 13-2 win.
Mike Williams was one of Newman's only bright spots in the loss, finishing 4-for-4 with a run scored in the contest.
John Bonebrake was the only other Jet to finish with a multi-hit effort, finishing 2-for-4. Newman starter Ashton Hoffman gave up six earned runs on eight hits in two innings of work in the losing effort.
The sweep drops Newman's record to 22-25 on the season. The Jets will return to action Monday night, taking on Wichita's independent minor league baseball team, the Wichita Wingnuts, in an exhibition contest. The game will be played at Wichita State's Eck Stadium with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
