Jets Swept at UAFS to End Season

WICHITA – The Newman baseball team completed its season against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday. The Jets lost all three games of the series; Thursday's game ended close with a 3-2 decision. Friday's first game of the doubleheader was another close draw, 2-1 and the final game ended 8-4.

Arkansas-Fort Smith 3, Newman 2 (Thursday)
Kyle Burkhardt pitched all eight innings of the game for Newman (22-28). Burkhardt allowed three runs off five hits and four walks. Two of Arkansas-Fort Smith's (25-21) three runs came in the bottom of the first, as the final run came in the second.

The Jet's two runs came in the top of the third. To start the two-out rally, Mike Williams was walked by Blake Brodie. A UAFS error advanced Williams to second and put Ryan Engrav on first. While Thomas Robulack was up to bat, a wild pitch moved Williams and Engrav up a base. Robulack doubled to center field to bring in Williams and Engrav for the only runs scored in the game. The Jets lost, 3-2.

Arkansas-Fort Smith 2, Newman 1 (Game 1 – Friday)
The Lions started the first game of Friday's doubleheader scoring one run off one hit and two Newman errors in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third, the Jets tied the game, 1-1. Jeff Oldenberg walked, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Brett Delcambre groundout moved Oldenberg to third. Oldenberg advanced home on a Jacob Gaul groundout.

Arkansas-Fort Smith scored one run in the fourth to take the game, 2-1. Brandon Droge pitched the six innings for Newman, allowing two runs off five hits and two walks.

Arkansas-Fort Smith 8, Newman 4 (Game 2 – Friday)
The Jets led the first five innings of the last game. In the second, Engrav was hit by a pitch, and then stole second to put the Jets in scoring position. A Corey Cowan single to left field allowed Engrav to score. After the second inning the Jets led, 1-0.

David Longmore started the two-out rally in the top of the third getting hit by a pitch. A Williams triple to center field scored Longmore. Engrav followed with a two-run homerun giving the Jets a 4-0 lead.

That was all Newman had as the Lions scored one run with two outs in the fourth. Followed by, two runs in the fifth and sixth, another in the seventh, and two in the eighth ending the game, 8-4.

After the three game loss, the Jets finished the season with an overall record of 22-28, and 10-17 in Heartland Conference play.
