Jets Drop Season Opener to Bethel, 2-1

WICHITA, Kan.- The Newman mens soccer team dropped its season opener for the 15th year in a row Thursday evening against Bethel. The Jets out shot their opponents by 14 shots but couldn't even the match after a late goal by junior Nicos Esquivel with 14 minutes left to play.

- Seven yellow cards were issued during the match. Newman had three, Bethel four.
- Jordan Saybounkham's penalty shot in the 78th minute would have given the Jets their first goal but was saved by Bethel goalkeeper Tyler Ruder.
- Nicos Esquivel scored Newman's only goal in the 86th minute beating the keeper from mid range on the right side. He was assisted by Amadou Doumbia.
- Amadou Doumbia led the Jets with six shots including a blast in the 69th minute that forced the Bethel keeper to make a miraculous save.
- Newman had 14 corner kicks in the match, nine more than Bethel.
- Thursday night marked Bethel's first-ever win over Newman, and snapped a series of 11 straight losses.
- Newman goalkeeper Jason Dewey recorded his first loss as a Jet, finishing the match with two saves and two goals allowed.
- Newman played five substitutes in the match including junior midfielder Nicos Esquivel who scored the only goal for the Jets.
