Volleyball Drops Second-Straight Five-Set Match

WICHITA - The Newman volleyball team continued Heartland Conference play Saturday afternoon with a five-set loss to Texas A&M International. Sophomore Haley Dotson led the Jets with 21 kills followed by senior Karol Marins with 15.

- The first set went back and fourth to a 12-12 tie until the Dustdevils reeled off three straight points capped by a Desiree Ortiz service ace to take a 15-12 lead. The Jets rallied back tying the set at 21-21, but TAMIU closed with three straight points and took the set on a kill by Maranda Pratt, 25-22.

- The Jets bolted out to an 8-2 lead early in the second set after a Karol Marins kill and a number of TAMIU errors. The Newman defense held the Dustdevils without a kill until Miranda Pratt killed a Daria Winckler set to pull within 11-4. TAMIU closed the gap to 16-13 after kills by Pratt and Andrea Marshall but the Jets combined three Dotson kills with a Marins kill to win the set 25-20.

- Newman jumped out to a 7-3 lead to begin the third set thanks in part to two Dotson kills, but TAMIU used a pair Marshall kills to tie the set 8-8. TAMIU took advantage of two Jet errors to take a 14-10 lead. Newman answered tying the set 15-15 after a pair of Katelyn Schmidtberger kills to tie the set 15-15, and closed out the set with two consecutive Chelsea Helena kills to win 25-21.

- Newman was forced to play from behind for most of the fourth set. The Dustdevils took an early 10-6 lead, and extened the lead to 18-12 back-to-back Winckler kills. Newman clawed back to 20-17after back-to-back kills by Schmidtberger but TAMIU was able to close out the set for a 25-19 win.

-The fifth set remained close all the way to a 10-10 tie. Marins followed a TAMIU attack error with a kill to give Newman a 12-10 lead but the Dustdevils scored the final five points of the set to win the match.

Dotson had a team high 21 kills in the match.
Gabby Loxterman and Schmidtberger shared setter duties during the match, both finishing with 28 assists. Schmidtberger added 14 kills and 8 digs to finish two digs shy of Newman's first triple-double of the season.
