Injuries Plague Jets in Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. - The Newman wrestling team finished 0-4 at the Tracy Borah Duals Saturday despite winning the majority of their bouts in two of their four duals. The team, which has been plagued with injury entered only eight wrestlers into competition and lost two more during the day's bouts forcing Coach Smith to forfeit several matches.

Colorado Mesa 33, Newman 15
The Jets got off to a good start in the 125 lb. weight class when Jordan Krenek won by decision over Daniel Romero, 9-7. The Mavericks responded in the next bout by tying the dual at 3-3 when Tyler Nelson claimed a decision win over Newman's Zach Vann, 4-1 in the 133 lb. division. The Jets took a 9-3 lead after CMU forfeited the 141 lb. match but the Mavericks used two straight pins by Trevor Donarski (149 lbs.) and Jon Gappmaier (157 lbs.) followed by two Newman forfeits at 165 and 174 lbs. to jump out to a 27-9 lead. Tyler Hasenbank narrowed the margin of deficit with a decision win over Nick Peterson, 8-7 in the 184 lb. weight class but CMU closed the door when Jordan Passehl (197 lbs.) pinned Lorenzo Serna (197 lbs.) to give the Mavericks a 33-12 lead. Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) finished off the dual with a decision victory over Francisco Retana (285 lbs.), 7-5.

Western State 30, Newman 15
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the dual after Dustin Stiegemeyer won by decision over Jordan Krenek, 1-0 in the 125 lb. division followed by a Mathew Greene (133 lbs.) pin of Zach Vann (133 lbs.). Newman closed the gap when Mitch Arnold pinned Michael Soiland in the 141 lb. division but forfeits by the Jets in the 149, 165 and 174 lb. weight classes and a Brandon Montoya (157 lbs.) decision victory over Jake Hattabaugh (157 lbs.), 12-6 pushed the lead to 30-6. Newman claimed the last three bouts with decision wins by Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.), Lorenzo Serna (197 lbs.) and Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) but the damage had already been done and the Jets fell 30-15.

Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) gave Newman a 9-6 lead by pinning Brock Dalton (141 lbs.) but The Jets, faced with injury, forfeited the next four bouts at 149, 157, 165 and 174 lbs. Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.), Lorenzo Serna (197 lbs.) and Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) once again closed the dual with decision wins but the points given up by the forfeits cost Newman the win, 30-20.

Colorado State-Pueblo 42, Newman 12
Newman's only points came from Colorado State-Pueblo forfeits at 141 and 184 lbs. The Jets gave the Thunderwolves 24 points by forfeiting bouts at 149, 157, 165 and 174 lbs. and lost the remaining four matches.
