WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Newman wrestling team will travel to Warrensburg, Mo. Sunday for the annual UCM Dual Jamboree hosted by the University of Central Missouri. The Jets are scheduled to dual Central Missouri, Ouachita Baptist and University of Mary beginning at 10 a.m.
Dual #1: Central Missouri (1-7) comes in off a strong showing at the Roger Denker Open Sunday Jan. 15. The Mules had three wrestlers place in the 141, 157 and 174 lb. divisions including a second place finish by Nick Viterisi at 141 lbs. The Jets last faced a UCM wrestler at the Midwest Classic on Dec. 18 when
Mitch Arnold grabbed a 3-1 decision over Viterisi.
Dual #2: Ouachita Baptist (1-3) enters competition after meeting Oklahoma City University in a dual Wednesday Jan. 18. The Tigers lost the dual, 30-10 but close bouts at 125 and 149 lbs. nearly swung the competition in OBU's favor. Ouachita Baptist carries four NCAA Div. II nationally ranked wresters on its roster, No. 7 Garrett Evans (125 lbs.), No. 8 Josh Meyers (141 lbs.), No. 7 Bobby Williams (157 lbs.) and No. 5 Dallas Smith (184 lbs.). The Tigers and Jets have met once already this season at the Jet Invitational on Dec. 11. OBU finished seventh out of the eleven teams in attendance and had three wrestlers place in the event.
Dual #3: Mary (0-2) visits Warrensburg after being defeated in dual match action by NCAA Div. II No. 1 St. Cloud, 28-12 and No. 3 Upper Iowa, 32-7. The Marauders bring one NCAA Div. II nationally ranked wrester into competition, No. 4 Trevor Johnson (141 lbs.) and have been receiving votes in the NCAA Div. II wrestling top 20 poll released by the Wrestling Coaches Association. The Newman wrestling team has yet to face off against Mary this season. In their last meeting the Marauders handed the Jets a 37-6 loss in last years' UMC Dual Jamboree.
The Jets will have several challenging bouts Sunday. At 125 lbs.
Jordan Krenek will face off against the NCAA Div. II No. 7 ranked wrestler from OBU, Garrett Evans. Krenek is coming off a 2-2 showing at the Tracy Borah Duals after picking up a win by forfeit Wednesday in the Jets' dual against Pratt CC.
Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) will likely face the toughest competition Sunday with bouts against No. 4 Trevor Johnson (141 lbs.) from Mary and No. 8 Josh Meyers (141 lbs.) from OBU. Arnold, who hasn't lost a match since Dec. 19, will look to build upon an already impressive 2011-12 season. In the 157 lb. division
Jake Hattabaugh is set to square off against No. 7 Bobby Williams from OBU while
Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.) is slated to meet No. 5 Dallas Smith (184 lbs.) along with the third ranked wrestler in the region Brady Anderson. Hasenbank enters competition riding a five match winning streak after pinning Taylor Baird Wednesday in Fugate Gymnasium. Rounding out the key match ups for the Jets is
Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) who is scheduled to face the regions' fifth ranked wrester Martin Patron (285 lbs.) from Mary.
