WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Newman wrestling team returns home after a 1-2 showing at the UCM Dual Jamboree on Sunday. Jacob Cole capped off a 12 point rally for the Jets, pinning his opponent in the heavyweight bout to grab a three point team win over the Mules.

Newman 26, Central Missouri 23
The Jets opened competition with three-straight wins at 125, 133 and 141 lbs. In the 125 lb. weight class Jordan Krenek won by technical fall, 16-0 over Ty Balty followed by a UCM forfeit at 133 lbs. Mitch Aronld (141 lbs.) gave the Jets a 14-0 lead with a 6-1 decision win against Nick Viterisi, marking the second time this year Arnold has beaten Viterisi. The Mules responded with four-straight wins at 149, 157, 165 and 174 lbs. to give UCM a 23-14 lead. Scott Neumann (149 lbs.) won by technical fall over JP Carter (149 lbs.), 16-0 followed by pins from Zebuland Spicer (157 lbs.) and Todd Brier (165 lbs.) and a Newman forfeit at 174 lbs, marking the last time the Mules would score. The Jets closed the dual with decisions from Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.) and Steven Cooksley (197 lbs.) and a pin from Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) over Derek Sanders (285 lbs.). Cole's win completed the comeback and the Jets claimed the 26-23 dual match victory.

Mary 30, Newman 10
Newman jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the dual after Jordan Krenek (125 lbs.) won by major decision over Hunter Menendez (125 lbs.) followed by a Kris Workman (133 lbs.) decision against Kyle Larson (133 lbs.), 2-1. Mary came back by winning the next seven bouts. At 141 lbs. Mitch Arnold was dealt his first defeat since losing at the Midwest Classic on Dec. 19, by the NCAA Div. II No. 4 ranked wrester Trevor Johnson while Tyler Hasenbank's (184 lbs.) six-match winning streak came to an end against the third ranked wrestler in the region, Brady Anderson (184 lbs.). Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) finished off the dual with a decision win over the region's fifth ranked wrester Martin Patron (285 lbs.), 5-4 but that wouldn't be enough and the Jets dropped the dual, 30-10.

Ouachita Baptist 33, Newman 18
In the final dual of the day the Tigers grabbed a quick lead when Garrett Evans (125 lbs.) used a decision win over Jordan Krenek to put OBU ahead, 3-0. Newman responded with a Kris Workman (133 lbs.) decision win over Seth Hutchinson (133 lbs.) and a pin from Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) against Cole Bundy (141 lbs.) to give the Jets a 9-3 lead. OBU came back by rattling off four-straight wins. Newman forfeited at 157 and 174 lbs. and Dexter Carter (149 lbs.) pinned JP Carter (149 lbs.) followed by Tyler Graham (165 lbs.) pinning Alex Prine (165 lbs.) to push the Tiger lead to 27-9. Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.) tried to bring the Jets back with a decision over No. 5 Dallas Smith (184 lbs.), 8-5 but a pin by CJ Hays (197 lbs.) against Steven Cooksley (197 lbs.) pushed the OBU lead to 33-12. Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) pinned Taylor Poe (285 lbs.) to finish off his weekend 3-0, but the Jets lost the dual, 33-18.

Several Newman wrestlers had strong showings Sunday in Warrensburg. Jordan Krenek (125 lbs.), Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) and Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.) all posted 2-1 marks in their individual weight classes. Krenek used a tech fall and a major decision to open 2-0 before losing by decision to No. 7 Garrett Evans, 4-1. At 141 lbs. Arnold lost to No. 4 Trevor Johnson but picked up a pin and a decision to go 2-1. Hasenbank grabbed a decision win to start his day but lost to the region's third ranked wrestler in his second bout. He responded in his final match by securing a decision over No. 5 Dallas Smith, 8-5. Kris Workman (133 lbs.) and Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) both went undefeated though Sunday's bouts. Workman opened competition with a win by forfeit but proceeded to use two wins by decision to finish 3-0. Cole secured a Newman win in his first bout by pinning Derek Sanders to give the Jets a 26-23 win over host UCM. He continued his winning ways using a decision and another pin to notch a 3-0 record.

With the 1-2 finish the Jets move to 3-8 in dual match action this season. They will return to the mat Sunday Jan. 29 when they travel to Baldwin City, Kan. for the Kansas Cup, hosted by Baker University. Action is schedule to begin at 10 a.m.
