BALDWIN CITY, Kan. –
Tyler Hasenbank's second place finish in the 184 lb. division highlighted the Newman wrestling team's appearance at the third annual Kansas Cup. Eight wrestlers represented Newman in the all-Kansas event, which was hosted by Baker University.
After opening with a bye in the quarter final round,
Hasenbank won his first bout by major decision, defeating Dylon Braum (Colby), 11-2. The win setup a championship bout between Hasenbank and Fort Hays State's Walter Clarke who entered the weekend as the top-ranked wrestler in the NCAA Div.II. Hasenbank forced overtime with Clarke, but settled for second after dropping a 9-4 decision.
Three other Newman wrestlers placed in the event.
Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) began his tournament with a win by decision over Tyler Smith (Bethany), 8-5 and advanced to the semifinals to face Brandon Gebhardt (Baker). In the semifinal bout Gebhardt defeated Cole by decision, 6-0 sending him to the wrestleback rounds. Cole opened wrestleback action with a decision win over Fabian Guerrero (Colby), 10-8, but dropped to the third place bout and a match against Tim Tuaquoi (Pratt).
