Hasenbank Claims Second at Kansas Cup

BALDWIN CITY, Kan.Tyler Hasenbank's second place finish in the 184 lb. division highlighted the Newman wrestling team's appearance at the third annual Kansas Cup. Eight wrestlers represented Newman in the all-Kansas event, which was hosted by Baker University.

After opening with a bye in the quarter final round, Hasenbank won his first bout by major decision, defeating Dylon Braum (Colby), 11-2. The win setup a championship bout between Hasenbank and Fort Hays State's Walter Clarke who entered the weekend as the top-ranked wrestler in the NCAA Div.II. Hasenbank forced overtime with Clarke, but settled for second after dropping a 9-4 decision.

Three other Newman wrestlers placed in the event. Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) began his tournament with a win by decision over Tyler Smith (Bethany), 8-5 and advanced to the semifinals to face Brandon Gebhardt (Baker). In the semifinal bout Gebhardt defeated Cole by decision, 6-0 sending him to the wrestleback rounds. Cole opened wrestleback action with a decision win over Fabian Guerrero (Colby), 10-8, but dropped to the third place bout and a match against Tim Tuaquoi (Pratt). Cole lost to Tuaquoi by decision, 6-5 and claimed a fourth place finish in the heavyweight division.

In his first bout Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) lost to Levi Schneider (Pratt) by decision, 7-3 and moved to the wrestleback bracket to face Jace Campbell (Colby). Arnold defeated Campbell by decision, 3-2 and advanced to a match against Jordan Basks (Labette) and a shot at the third place match. Basks handed Arnold a 7-1, decision loss and sent him to the fifth place match. In his final bout Arnold faced Levi Schneider in a rematch of his opening match. This time things went Arnold's way and he handed Schneider a 7-2 decision loss, securing a fifth place finish at 141 lbs.

Jordan Krenek (125 lbs.) rounded out the Newman placers with a sixth place finish in the 125 lb. division. The freshman defeated Bo Newport (Baker) by decision, 6-5 and moved to the semifinal round where he was pinned by Jeff Vesta (Neosho) and sent to the wrestleback rounds. In his next bout Krenek lost by decision, 6-4 to Colin Hase (Fort Hays) and dropped to the fifth place bout to face Brandon Goodwin (Bethany). In that match he lost due to medical forfeit and finished with a sixth place finish at 125 lbs.

Four other Newman wrestlers competed in the tournament.

The Jets will be back in action Wednesday Feb. 1 when they host Central Missouri for a dual inside Fugate Gymnasium. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
