Jets Sweep Aggies on Senior Night

WICHITA - Thursday evening was senior night as the Newman volleyball team took on Oklahoma Panhandle State at Fugate Gymnasium. The only senior for the Jets, Katelyn Schmidtberger led Newman to a 3-0 set sweep; beating the Aggies 25-17, 25-10 and 25-14.

It was a memorable night for Schmidtberger as the Jets led its way to a conference win. In the first set, the Aggies were not able to catch up with Newman. The Jets recorded 14 kills compared to the Oklahoma Panhandle's 8 kills. Five kills from junior Haley Dotson, four kills from Schmidtberger and three from junior Belinda Rohling led to 25-17 victory over the Aggies.

The Jets restricted the Aggies even more in the second set. Oklahoma Panhandle recorded six kills, while Newman's 11 kills (four from freshman Samantha Minihan, three from junior Gabby Loxterman and two a piece from Dotson and Schmidtberger) and two blocks led the way to the 25-10 second-set win.

Newman's momentum followed in to the third set. Dotson had five of the Jets 12 kills. With the best team attacking percentage (.409) of the three sets, the ladies finished the match with a 25-14 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle.

Dotson led the team with 12 kills, while Schmidtberger had eight kills and 10 digs and Loxterman had 25 assists with five kills.

Following the match, Newman honored Schmidtberger for her leadership in the two years playing as a Jet. Schmidtberger thanked her parents, teammates and coaches for helping her become the person she is today.

Newman is now 4-12 overall and 2-7 in Heartland play. The team will travel to Arkansas-Fort Smith on Oct. 25 for a two-day, two-match series.
