WICHITA - Newman University honored its seniors on Saturday as the team took on the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB). The Senior Day event was a fiery contest that allowed spectators to witness a total of 27 fouls in the 4-1 victory for the Jets.
The fouls throughout the game were mild, but were enough get the adrenaline flowing through all players. Hot onto the field in the highest gear possible, the Jets applied a lot of pressure in the first half as the team worked up the field seeking that opening opportunity.
It was senior
Brandon Carlos who claimed the first goal for the Jets in the 30th minute as
Matt McConnell assisted the senior's effort.
Newman, continuing to apply pressure was then awarded a penalty in the 37th minute.
Nathan Modesto stepped up and struck the ball, but unfortunately found the post. At 1-0 the Jets would have been disappointed going in at half time with just the one goal but that wasn't to be. With less than one minute remaining a scrappy, packed goal box allowed senior
Sebastien Negro to collect a lose clearance and play the ball back into the danger zone where senior
Amadou Doumbia held of opposing players to find the back of the net.
The second half looked as though it would go the same way as the Jets quickly attacked UTPB. Once more, it was to be the seniors involved.
Matheus Daniel's pass found Carlos whose driven shot found the bottom right corner of the goal after goalkeeper Chris Benavides' best efforts to save the shot.
UTPB Falcons then found themselves getting more of the ball as the Jets seemed to sit back allowing the opposition to play. Applying more pressure on the home side to break the shutout, the falcons had several blocked shots but only had one shot saved as
Jason Dewey comfortably caught a volleyed effort from Jose Anchondo. The Jets defense standing strong kept the Falcons out and many believed that their efforts had been rewarded when senior Modesto stepped up to take a free kick from a good shooting range. For Modesto it wasn't to be, as the set piece specialist once more found the post.
Three minutes after Modesto found the post, UTPB'S Falcons managed to steal a goal as Jose Anchondo assisted Garret Paterson whose 84th minute shot from fifty yards crept under the crossbar and over the hands of goalkeeper
Jason Dewey.
Just when the game was believe to be over the Jets turned up the heat once more as goalkeeper Benavides was chipped by
Matt McConnell as the senior received the ball via a quick throw in from another senior Souza. At the end of regulation time, the Jets held off the Falcons, 4-1.
The win moves Newman to an overall record of 6-9-1 and 5-5-1 in Heartland play. The Jets will travel to Tulsa, Okla. as they look to take on Oral Roberts University on Oct. 31st. The game will start at 7 p.m.
