Jets Flying On the Road

ODESSA, Texas - Newman University's Jets were flying on the road this week as the team, having already beat McMurry in a convincing 4-0 victory, took it's momentum to the Univeristy of Texas of the Permian Basin, where the Jets came out winners 2-1 in the second period of overtime.

UTPB came out strong as they possessed the ball well but were unable to get forward into a threatening position as the Jets worked well as a unit forcing them to play side-to-side, preventing any forward attacking build up. The Jets duo, Marcio Souza and Matt McConnel were at it again in this game, as the two players linked up well causing problems left, right and center offensively for the Jets.

"Matt and Marcio linked up very well together and they have both been very effective for us, especially in these past weeks. Once we were able to gain possession of the ball from UTPB we looked very dangerous going forward all of the time. Matt McConnel had a great strike that rattled the post and then scored a good goal too." Coach Cliff Brown

The goal for the Jets came from out wide as Victor Rojas, who Coach described as having a "solid performance," put the ball across to Souza who read the play well and faked, crating a good shooting opportunity for McConnel who finished.

"After going a goal up UTPB got hold of the ball more and earned their goal by attacking us more aggressively, however we still looked threatening each time we went forward."

Robin Alllard, Matheus Daniel and Nathan Modesto, put in good shifts for the Jets this week as neither one of them were substitued, playing a total of 200 minutes. Another player who wasn't substitued and has been a key player for the Jets is freshman Kevin Crafton.

"Kevin has been solid for us this season and over the last couple of games he has barely put a foot wrong. Our freshman have really helped our team this year and Taylor HenryJohn Senseman, and Victor Rojas who contributed to today's first goal have been fantastic.

Overtime produced a thrilling encounter for the Jets and UTPB as the Jets prevented UTPB from getting past the halfway line on almost every occasion. The Jets were not looking to leave with a point and came flying out of the break in to the overtime period and launched an assault on the homeside.

In the second period of overtime the Jets had a corner and also two shots saved in just 2minutes and 40seconds, before finally wrapping the game up with the winning goal as Matt McConnel took the ball to the byline and crossed to Marcio Souza who headed the ball into the net to secure the win for the Jets.

Coach Brown remarked; "It was a great result and the players left everything they had on the field. It's hard for a team to travel in this conference and the lads have coped very well this season. I am pleased we have been able to scoop up wins on the road."

The Jets next take on St Edwards University on Oct. 11 in Austin, Texas at 3.30 p.m.
