ABILENE, Texas - The Newman volleyball team completed its season at Abilene, Texas on Saturday afternoon. The Jets fell to the War Hawks in a four-set series: 25-19, 25-19, 25-13 and 25-18. Junior
Hannah Melichar finished the match with 20 kills.
The first set started in Newman's favor, but a couple of errors by the Jets allowed the War Hawks to gain the lead. When the score of 13-6 in favor of McMurry, Newman took a timeout. The Jets closed the lead to 13-11 forcing the War Hawks to call a timeout. McMurry kept the lead, but the Jets stayed close. Melichar finished with six kills while junior
Gabby Loxterman had eight sets. After the 25-19 set, McMurry led 25-19.
Sophomore
Carissa Villaflor started the second set with a service ace, but the Jets could not continue that momentum. Newman's six kills from Melichar and three kills from senior
Katelyn Schmidtberger was not enough; McMurry took the second set 25-19.
Newman dominated in the third set. The set was tied at 9-9, but Newman never let McMurry come close again. With Schmidtberger's six kills, Melichar's three kills and junior
Belinda Rohling's three kills, along with Loxterman's 13 assits the Jets forced the match into another set with a 25-13 victory.
McMurry came back strong, completing the set with 17 kills. The Jets 14 kills, five from Melichar, were not enough for the War Hawks to dwindle down. McMurry won the final set, 25-18.
Newman finished its season with a 4-19 overall record and 2-12 in conference play.
