Jets Finish Season with a Double Overtime Loss

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Newman men's soccer team loss to Oklahoma Christian on Saturday evening. The Jets were looking for a victory, but the Eagles swooped in for the double overtime victory, 3-2. Senior Nathan Modesto scored a goal with junior Marcio Souza, while goalkeeper junior Robin Allard had 11 saves. 

In the first half the Jets were a threat to the Eagles. Although the Jets had one less shot than the Eagles, Newman was able to make some plays. In the five minute mark, Souza looked for the first goal of the match, but the ball hit the crossbar. Souza's opportunity in the 26 minute was good for a Newman goal. A cross from junior Jordan Saybounkham assisted Souza in his fifth goal of the season. After a couple of more attempts from both ends of the pitch, the score was in favor of the Jets, 1-0 at the halftime mark.

Oklahoma Christian came out firing in the second half. Jets goalkeeper Allard displayed an athletic performance with the 16 shots taken by the Eagles. Allard had countless one-on-ones, but defeated the offensive opponents. With 11 shots from both ends in less than 20 minutes, the Jets still led 1-0. A Eagles foul in the box allowed a penatly kick in the 65th minute. Modesto made his fourth penalty kick (out of five attempts) for the season. The Jets led 2-0. Less than 45 seconds later, Oklahoma Christian received the same opportunity-a penalty kick. The Eagles scored to made it a 2-1 match. In the closing minutes of the second half it looked to be a victory for Newman, but the Eagles scored in the 86th minute to force the game into overtime. 

The first overtime was a back-and-forth competition. At the 97th minute mark, senior Nicos Esquivel looked to end the game for the Jets, but the ball took a slight turn hitting the post. The 2-2 tie led to another overtime.

In the double overtime the Eagles scored at the 102:38 minute mark, ending Newman's season with a 3-2 loss.

Newman completed its season with 4-5-1 record in conference play, and 6-11-1 overall.
