WICHITA – The Newman wrestling team fell to 3-9 in dual match action after a 25-20 loss to Central Missouri Wednesday night inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Jordan Krenek and
Lorenzo Serna picked up contested wins while two other Newman wrestlers grabbed wins by forfeit.
The Jets jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after
Jordan Krenek (125 lbs.) won by technical fall over Ty Balty, 20-3. Central Missouri's Eric Mateo (133 lbs.) was quick to respond for the Mules, defeating
Kris Workman in a 12-3 major decision, cutting the Newman lead to 5-4.
Mitch Arnold and Nick Viterisi met for the fourth time this season to decide the 141 lb. match. Arnold, who had gone 2-1 against Viterisi in their prior meetings lost by decision, 6-1 in overtime, and gave the Mules a 7-5 lead. Newman immediately regained the lead, 11-7 after Central Missouri forfeited the next bout at 149 lbs. The Mules claimed wins in the next four weight classes and took a 25-11 lead with two matches remaining.
Newman's
Lorenzo Serna (197 lbs.) grabbed a decision over Derick Sanders (197 lbs.), 5-0 followed by a UCM forfeit at 285 lbs. but it wasn't enough to retake the lead and the Jets fell 25-20 in the dual.

With the loss, Newman drops to 3-9 in dual match action this season. They will return to action Feb. 4 when they travel to Plainview Texas for the Texas Shootout hosted by Wayland Baptist. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
