PLAINVIEW, Texas – Steven Cooksley highlighted the Newman wrestling team's trip to Plainview, Texas Saturday for the Texas Shootout. Cooksley went undefeated on the day, while the Jets went 1-2 overall, including a 27-23 win over host Wayland Baptist.

Grand Canyon 33, Newman 12
The Lopes jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after Kyle McCrite (125 lbs.) and Lino Estrada (133 lbs.) grabbed major decisions over Jordan Krenek, 12-4 and Kris Workman, 10-1, respectively. Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) responded for the Jets with a 5-1 decision over Vince Hererra to cut the Grand Canyon lead to 8-3. The Lopes refused to give up the lead though, and reeled off four-straight wins in the 149, 157, 165 and 174 lb. weight classes, widening the gap to 29-3. Tyler Hasenbank (184 lbs.) notched a 3-2 decision over GCU's Brett Sanchez and Steven Cooksley (197 lbs.) followed his teammate by pinning Eric Fan to cut the lead to 29-12. The Lopes finished the dual with a Jordan Johnson (285 lbs.) major decision over Jacob Cole, 15-3 to secure the 33-12 win.

Ouachita Baptist 29, Newman 18
Newman started the dual with a 6-0 lead after Ouachita Baptist forfeited the 125 lb. bout. The Tigers were quick to regain the advantage though, using wins from Seth Hutchinson over Kris Workman in the 133 lb. match, and Josh Meyers over Mitch Arnold in the 141 lb. bout, to grab a 7-6 lead. Newman's Greg Delk (149 lbs.) gave the lead back to the Jets with a decision over Dexter Carter, 4-0 but the Tigers wouldn't go away and won the next four bouts at 157, 165, 174 and 184 lbs. to take a 29-9 lead. In the 197 lb. weight class, Steven Cooksley grabbed his second win of the day by pinning Ouachita Baptist's CJ Hays followed by a Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) decision over Taylor Poe, 6-1. That wouldn't be enough to retake the lead and Jets fell 29-18 to the Tigers.

Newman 27, Wayland Baptist 23
In the final dual of the day the Pioneers used major decisions from Albert Tapia (125 lbs.) and Donovan Vanderbilt (133 lbs.) to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. The Jets responded in the next bout when Mitch Arnold (141 lbs.) pinned Victor Thomas for his second win of the day, cutting the WBU lead to 8-6. Wayland Baptist's Chris Hart (149 lbs.) won by decision, 6-4 over Greg Delk and Bernie Gonzalez (157 lbs.) followed it up by pinning Newman's JP Carter to push the Pioneer lead to 17-6. The Jets weren't done though, and after trading forfeits with WBU at 165 and 174 lbs. used a pin from Tyler Hasnebank (184 lbs.) and a decision from Steven Cooksley (197 lbs.) to draw it as close at 23-21. In the final bout of the dual Newman's Jacob Cole (285 lbs.) pinned Markese Christian to give the Jets the win, 27-23.

With the 1-2 finish the Jets move to 4-11 in dual match action this season. They return to the mat Wednesday, Feb. 8 when Central Oklahoma comes to town for a dual inside Fugate Gymnasium. Action is schedule to begin at 7 p.m.
