Baseball Holds Off Hornets to Break Skid, 2-1

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Newman baseball team broke a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over non-conference rival Emporia State Tuesday evening at Glennen Field in Emporia. Ben Wagner went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the win.

Emporia State (19-9) notched first-inning run, and took a 1-0 lead after the first frame. Newman (18-10) notched four hits over the next four innings, and finally plated a run when Ben Wagner scored from third on a botched fielding attempt at third, and tied the game at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

The Jets continued to hit Hornet starter Brandon Faulkner, and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth. With two outs in the inning, David Longmore singled through the right side, then moved to second when Jordan Ollenberger singled to right field. Longmore went on to score on Wagner's single to first base, and gave the Jets the 2-1 lead they went on to win by.

Ben Wagner went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Newman offense, and played a part in both Newman runs with one scored and one batted in.

Newman starter Tony Gonzales allowed just one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work, and improved to 3-1 on the season.

With the win, the Jets improve to 18-10 on the season. They will return to action Friday, traveling to Goodwell, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Aggie Field.
