Close Encounter as Jets Fall Short

WICHITA - Newman University hosted Oklahoma Christian's men soccer team on Saturday as the team was not able to keep up with the Eagles. Marcio Souza scored the only goal for the Jets in the 2-1 loss.

Coach Brown's team looked to be prepared for the encounter with Oklahoma Chrstian Eagles. The Jets came out quickly testing the Eagles goal after just four minutes of play as shots from Kevin Crafton and Matt McConnell were both blocked by the Eagles defensive line.

Despite the positive start from the homeside it was the visitors who looked to light up the scoreboard first as Sam Guernsey intercepted a loose ball before driving at the Jets backline. The Eagles then cut acroos the box and struck the ball into the bottom corner on the 17th minute.

The atmosphere of the game then faded as the visitors simply controlled the ball until the end of the first period. After the interval, one effort from the Jets looked to threaten the goal as Nicos Esquivel had a shot blocked inside of the penalty box.

With six minutes left in the game Marcio Souza found himslef surrounded by defenders in the box and managed to find the back of the net for the Jets as every coach and player celebrated by the corner flag. Then with four minutes left Souza again found himself in the box, this time unmarked as Victor Rojas pulled the ball back, only to see Souza shoot wide.

The Newman fans were optimistic about the outcome of the game, but moments later they were silenced by a goal from Tommy Guernsey as he headed in the winning goal with just three minutes remaining. The Jets loss the game 2-1.

The men's record turns to 0-4 as they begin Conference play on the road in Texas to take on Texas A&M International on Sept. 20.
