The Newman wrestling team went 1-2 at the Central Missouri Duals on Sunday (Jan. 6) in Warrensburg, Mo. The Jets defeated host Central Missouri, 25-19, and dropped two duals to two Top 20 teams: No. 2 Newberry (40-6) and No. 18 Ashland (38-9).
The Jets won six of the 10 matches in the 25-19 win against UCM. J.P. Hunter started the dual with a pin at 2:00 to give NU the early 6-0 lead. After falling behind 10-6 on two losses,
Colton Duhr won a 3-1 decision at 157 lbs. to make it 10-9. The Mules won at 165 lbs. to go up 16-9, however, the Jets won four of the final five matches to take the win.
Reece Wright-Conklin started the run with a 5-1 decision win at 174 lbs.
Tyler Hasenbank won a major decision (15-6) to tie the match at 16-16. At 197 lbs.
Steven Cooksley pinned Benjamin Boyd at 2:41 to put the Jets up 22-16. After a UCM win,
Kris Workman's decision win in the final match gave the Jets a 25-19 win.
Against No. 2 Newberry, Wright-Conklin and Cooksley were the only two winners for Newman. Wright-Conklin won an 11-6 decision, and Cooksley got a sudden victory 7-5 win.
Duhr, Wright-Conklin and
Lorenzo Serna each won their matches in the 38-9 loss to No. 18 Ashland. Duhr won a 1-0 decision, Wright-Conklin won on a 4-0 decision and Serna used a 2-1 decision to get the win.
Wright-Conklin went 3-0 on the day in the three duals.
The Jets return to Central Missouri for the Roger Denker Open on Jan. 13 in Warrensburg, Mo. at the Multipurpose Building.
