Volleyball Gets Back on Track with 3-1 Win

Box Score WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team got back on track with a 3-1 win against McMurry on Thursday night (Oct. 31) at Fugate Gymnasium. The win snapped a four-match losing streak, as NU improved to 12-10 and 6-8 in the Heartland Conference. McMurry fell to 10-14 and 6-7 in the conference.
 
In the first set, NU started fast with a 4-0 advantage. With the score 7-6, the Lady Jets scored five straight points to pull ahead 12-6 and force McMU into a timeout. The Lady Jets controlled play for the rest of the set, winning 25-17.
 
The Lady Jets scored the first four points again in the second set. Still up by four at 13-9, NU went on a 6-0 run, including back-to-back kills from Gaylynn Jones, to go up 19-9. At 21-14, the Lady Jets scored the last four points to win 25-14. Jarin Braithwait put the set away with a kill.
 
NU was strong to start in the third set, going up 21-17. However, the War Hawks went on a 7-1 run to force set point at 24-22. Shelby Zoglman kept NU in the set with a kill, but McM got a kill of their own to win set three, 25-23.
 
After falling behind 5-2 in the fourth set, NU used an 8-0 run to take a 10-5 advantage. A 4-0 run for the War Hawks kept them in the set and pulled them to within one at 14-13. With the Lady Jets up 16-15, two McM errors and a Braithwait kill put NU up 19-15. A Jones service ace by Jones gave NU match point at 24-19. After four straight McM points, Zoglman lifted NU to a 25-23 set win with a kill.
 
Jones totaled a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 13 digs. Zoglman added 11 kills, and Jeana Farruggia had 10 kills. Alexus Litts had a match-high 49 assists.
 
The Lady Jets welcome St. Edward's to Fugate Gymnasium on Saturday (Nov. 2) at noon.
