Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – After jumping out to a 1-0 lead early in the game, the Jets struggled to mount an offensive against the No. 1 ranked Rattlers of St. Mary's, who dropped the Jets 11-1 at Wolff Stadium in the season opener Friday afternoon.
Jarrod Flax led the Jets at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk.
The first two innings passed without any runs being scored, though both teams threatened early. Sophomore
Christian Dye led off the top of the third inning with a single up the middle, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Ben Wagner. With two outs
Terrell Brown bounced a ball towards third that tipped off the third baseman's glove and allowed Dye to score as the ball squirted into left field, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead early in the game.
The lead was short-lived though, as the Rattlers struck back with two outs in the bottom of the inning to lock the game up at 1-1. The Jets were back on the offensive in the top of the fourth though, as center fielder
Tanner Vinson led off the inning with a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out. Newman looked to be in business, but Rattlers' pitcher Renee Solis struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
St. Mary's broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of singles and a squeeze bunt, scoring two runs to give them a 3-1 lead after four. The Rattlers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1, where the score would remain until the seventh.
Jets pitcher
Brandon Roberts, into the game in relief of starter Jake Furr, got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rattlers strung together four hits to put two more runs on the board, and the Jets trailed 6-1 after seven. The Rattlers then broke the game open in the eighth, tagging reliever
Chris Egger for five runs in the inning, yielding the run-rule 11-1 score.
With the loss, Newman falls to 0-1 on the season (0-1 Heartland). The Jets will wrap up their opening series tomorrow with an afternoon doubleheader at Wolff Stadium. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
