Jets Take Game 3 of TAMIU Series 7-2

Box Score LAREDO, Tex. - Newman's baseball team snapped a three-game losing skid Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 victory in the third game of its weekend series with Texas A&M International.  The Jets' bats set the table for the win, tacking on 13 hits led by Ruben Marrero, who went 4-for-4 on the day with a triple and two RBIs.

The Jets offense started early, with Jarrod Flax leading off the game with a double down the left field line.  Jordan Ollenberger followed with a single into left center to advance Flax to third, and Marrero followed suit with a single through the right side to plate the run and put the Jets up 1-0 after the first half inning.

Newman was back at it in the top of the third, with Flax again setting the table for the offense.  After lacing a single into left field, Flax moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ollenberger.  Marrero again came through for the Jets, smacking a single up the box that scored Flax and put the Jets up 2-0.  The lead was more than enough for starter Tony Gonzalez, who held the Dustdevils hitless through the first three frames and allowed just two hits through his first six innings of work.

The Jets tacked on two more runs in the fifth and seventh innings, both times ignited by Marrero.  In the fifth inning, Marrero doubled to deep left field, one-hopping the wall with one out to set up an RBI opportunity for pinch-hitter Terrell Brown, who sent a timely single into right center to score the run.  Then in the seventh, Marrero led off the inning with a triple into left center, then scored on a safety squeeze by Tanner Vinson to put the Jets up 4-0 going into the seventh inning stretch.

TAMIU finally got to Gonzalez in the seventh, and spoiled the shutout by stringing together three hits to plate two runs.  After surrendering a leadoff single, Gonzalez got the next two batters to fly out and seemed to be on his way to working out of the inning.  The Dustdevils would not go down easily though, and rattled off back-to-back doubles to cut the Jet lead to 4-2.  Brandon Roberts came on in relief of Gonzalez and put out the fire, getting Alvaro Rondon to ground out to second to end the threat.

Newman added some insurance in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs to put the game out of reach.  After Ruben Marrero and John Branum reached on walks, Terrell Brown doubled down the right field line to score both runners.  Tanner Vinson followed by ripping a single into left field to score Brown, and the Jets led 7-2 going into the bottom of the ninth.  After getting the first out, Roberts allowed back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second, but on the next pitch got Jaron Shimmel to ground into a game-ending double play to seal the victory for the Jets.

Tony Gonzalez picked up his second win of the season, surrendering two runs on five hits and striking out two in six and two-thirds innings of work.  Brandon Roberts tossed two and a third scoreless innings to slam the door for Newman.

With the win, the Jets move to 5-8 on the season (5-7 Heartland).  They will look to get a streak rolling next weekend, when they host the Falcons of Texas Permian Basin in a three game series at McCarthy Field.
