WICHITA – The Newman wrestling team defeated Baker University, 27-7, in the Jets' first home dual of the season on Wednesday night (Feb. 5) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets won eight of the 10 matches, including the final four, in the victory.
The Jets pulled out to a 12-0 lead after winning the first three matches of the dual.
Kris Workman started the match with a 3-2 decision win in the 125 lb. class. He used a takedown midway through the third period to get the victory. In the 133 lb. class,
Travis Rodenbaugh won an 8-6 decision over AJ Gassman. Aaron Engels doubled the Jets lead to 12-0 on a pin at 1:33 over Paxon Fowler.
After a loss at 149 lb.,
Colton Duhr got a 3-0 decision win in the 157 lb., using a third period reversal to score two points and added one point due to ride time to get the win. Baker picked up their second win in the 165 lb. class as Brandon Scott defeated
Alex Prine; however, the Jets still led 15-7.
The Jets won the final four matches, all by decisions, to take the dual, 27-7.
Reece Wright-Conklin won a 4-1 decision over Joe Pace at 174. Travis Hasenbank used a late takedown to win 4-3 over John Hambleton in the 184 lb. class.
Steven Cooksley pushed the score to 24-7 with a 3-2 win. In the final match of the dual,
Lorenzo Serna won via a 6-1 decision.
The Jets return to the mat tomorrow night (Feb. 6) against Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium.
