Jets Drop Eagles 12-6 In Nonconference Tilt

Box Score WICHITA – Newman's baseball team notched its tenth win of the season Tuesday night, defeating the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian University 12-6 under the lights at McCarthy field.  Ruben Marrero led the charge for the Jet offense, going 4-for-5 on the day with five RBIs, and Jarrod Flax continued his hot hitting of late with a 3-for-4 effort with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs.

The Jets continued their recent trend of scoring early and often, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.  After Jarrod Flax singled and stole second, Terrell Brown struck out swinging on a curveball, but the ball bounced away from the catcher and allowed Flax to score all the way from second and saw Brown make it to second on the play, putting the Jets up 1-0 after two batters.  After Brown moved over to third on a groundout, Ruben Marrero picked up the RBI with a groundout to second, and the Jets took a 2-0 lead into the second frame.

The Eagles got on the board in the top of the second, cashing in on a one-out double with an RBI single to left to cut the lead to 2-1.  Newman would punch back in the bottom of the inning though, and would cruise to victory from there.  Jordan Ollenberger was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off, and Jordon Jenkins drew a one-out walk to put men at first and second with one out.  Christian Dye reached on a fielder's choice which erased Jenkins, and the Jets had runners at the corners with two away and the top of the lineup coming up.  With Dye going on the pitch, Jarrod Flax smacked a single into the right center field gap which knocked Ollenberger in and allowed Dye to score all the way from first, putting the Jets up 4-1.  Terrell Brown reached on an infield single to third base, then moved up to second when the third baseman threw the ball into right field, which allowed Flax to score.  After Ricky Sanchez walked, Brown and Sanchez pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third for Marrero, who promptly sent a line drive single into right to score both runners and stretch the lead to 7-1.  John Branum doubled down the left field line to score Marrero, and when the dust had settled the Jets had put up six two-out runs and went into the top of the third leading 8-1.

OCU finally chased Jet starter Devin Osbment in the fourth, taking advantage of an error and a walk and adding three hits to score two runs and cut the score to 8-3.  Fellow freshman Brandon Mercer came on in relief and induced a lineout to get the Jets out of the jam.

Newman tacked on some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, again with two out hitting as the key.  After the first two batters were sent down, Christian Dye worked a full-count walk and advanced to second on a balk.  Jarrod Flax and Terrell Brown both drew walks to load up the bases, and Ricky Sanchez took a ball off the hip to plate Dye and move everybody up 90 feet.  Marrero again would come up big for the Jets, lacing a single into right center to score Flax and Brown and move Sanchez over to third base.  John Branum bounced a single up the middle to score Sanchez, and the two-out four spot had the Jets leading 12-3 going to the top of seven.

Oklahoma Christian got to Mercer in the seventh, following a one-out hit by pitch with a double and a triple to plate two runs and cut the score to 12-5.  Another run would score later in the inning on a Jet error, but Tyler Rosenboom came in to put out the flames and end the threat, striking out the three hitter and getting the DH to line out to short.  James Hilts came on in relief and worked two scoreless innings to seal the victory for the Jets.

With the win, the Jets move above .500 for the first time this season, improving to 10-9 (7-8 Heartland).  They will look to continue their success at home this weekend when they play host to conference rival Arkansas Fort-Smith for a three-game set, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday.  First pitch for game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
