Jets Split Doubleheader with UTPB

Box Score ODESSA, Tex. – After dropping game one by a 5-1 decision, the Jets took game two 9-2 to salvage a split of their doubleheader with Texas Permian Basin Saturday afternoon.  Jarrod Flax led the Jets with a 5 for 9 effort on the day with two runs scored.

Game 1: UTPB 5, Newman 1
The Jets looked to be in business early in the first, with Flax reaching on a single to lead off the game and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Ricky Sanchez lifted a ball to short right field that the right fielder appeared to have a bead on, but it fell in short.  The ball squirted by the right fielder and Flax tried to score from second, but the second baseman picked the ball up and whipped it home to nail Flax at the plate.

Permian Basin started the bottom of the inning off in the same manner that the Jets did, with the leadoff man reaching on a single and advancing to second on a sacrifice.  The Falcons' cleanup hitter smacked a two-out single through the right side, and UTPB led 1-0 after the first.

The Falcons were back on the offensive in the bottom of the second, with a double and a single putting runners at the corners with one man down.  Newman starter Zak Mickens struck out the next batter on a curveball, but the ball bounced away from the catcher and allowed the runner to score from third, putting Permian Basin up 2-0 after two frames.

The score would remain 2-0 until the sixth, when the Jets would finally punch back and get on the board.  Terrell Brown got the offense rolling with a leadoff single to left, then advanced to second on a botched pickoff attempt.  Ruben Marrero followed by lacing a single into left field, giving the Jets runners at first and third with one away.  John Branum then smacked a ground rule double into left center to score Brown, and the Jets appeared to be in business with men at second and third.  The Falcons brought on a reliever who sent the next two Jets down, and the threat was over.

UTPB strung three hits and a walk together to plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and added another insurance run via the squeeze bunt to extend their lead to the 5-1 final in the shortened seven-inning game

Game 2: Newman 9, UTPB 2
The Jets were back on the offensive early, with John Branum getting things going in the top of the second with a one-out double down the left field line.  Branum then came around to score from second when a pickoff throw from the catcher sailed into center field, and the Jets were up 1-0 after an inning and a half.

Permian Basin would tie the game up in the bottom of the inning, though, taking advantage of two Jet errors to plate a run and lock the game up at 1-1 after two innings played.  The score would remain tied until the fifth, when the Jets would take the lead and not relinquish it.

Newman loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth thanks to a hit by pitch and two infield singles.  After Terrell Brown reached on a fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded with one down, Ricky Sanchez smashed a bases-clearing triple to center field to plate three runs and put the Jets up 4-1.  Ruben Marrero knocked Sanchez in with an RBI groundout, and Newman led 5-1 at the end of the inning.

The Jets were back at it in the top of the sixth, loading the bases again with one out thanks to singles from Jordan Ollenberger and Christian Dye and a hit by pitch from Jordon JenkinsJarrod Flax singled to right field to move everybody up 90 feet, stretching the lead to 6-1.  Terrell Brown grounded out to second to score Jenkins, and Ruben Marrero singled to center field to score Dye and Flax, putting the Jets up 9-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.

The score would remain 9-1 until the bottom of the ninth, when the Falcons got a run thanks to a balk call, but Elliot Velasquez struck out the next batter to end the game and cap the 9-2 victory.

Jake Furr picked up his second win of the season, tossing six innings of three-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out six.

The Jets move to 6-9 with the split (6-8 Heartland).  They will look to take the series tomorrow afternoon in the final game of this Heartland Conference matchup, with the first pitch of game three scheduled for 1 p.m.
