Jets Walk Off In Ninth To Tie Series With St. Ed's

Box Score WICHITA – After dropping the first game of their afternoon doubleheader with the Hilltoppers 5-4, the Jets came roaring back from a three run deficit in game two, capped by Christian Dye's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to salvage a split on the day.

Game 1: St. Edward's 5, Newman 4
The Hilltoppers put up all five of their runs in the first two innings and starter Brannon Easterling went the distance in the shortened seven-inning game.  St. Edward's took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, stringing four hits together and taking advantage of an error to take the early advantage.  After the Jets went down in order in the bottom of the first, the Hilltoppers put up two more runs in the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead after an inning and a half.

The Jets got on the board in the bottom of the inning, with John Branum reaching on a hit by pitch and advancing to third on a single by Tanner VinsonChristian Dye flied out to right field to plate Branum on the sacrifice, and the Jets trailed 5-1 through two frames.

The score would remain the same until the fifth, when Jordan Ollenberger drew a two-out walk and then scored all the way from first on a towering double to center field by Ben Wagner to cut the Hilltopper lead to 5-2.  Ruben Marrero hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3.  The Jets attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, with pinch-hitter TJ Shedrick reaching on an infield single to lead the inning off.  Ollenberger reached on a second infield single, and Wagner laid down a sac bunt to move the runners over to second and third with one away.  After Jarrod Flax was plunked by the first pitch he saw, Terrell Brown reached on a fielder's choice to score Shedrick and put the score at 5-4 with the tying run at third.  After battling to a 2-2 count, Easterling got Marrero to ground out to shortstop to end the game as St. Edward's took game one.

Game 2: Newman 6, St. Edward's 5
Game two featured a much more slow-paced start, with all but three of the runs scored in the game coming in the final three innings.  St. Edward's jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a solo shot in the top of the second, but the Jets would answer back in the bottom of the third inning with a two-RBI single from Ruben Marrero to put Newman up 2-1 through three innings.

The Jets held the lead until the seventh inning, when the Hilltoppers finally chased starter Jake Furr after loading the bases with one man down.  Taylor Johnson knocked a bases clearing double into left center, and just like that St. Edward's was back on top 4-2.  After Johnson stole third on the next pitch, the three hitter for the Hilltoppers flied out to deep left to plate the run, and the Jets now trailed 5-2 with nine outs left.

Newman would not roll over so easily though, as TJ Shedrick got things rolling by drawing a leadoff walk and stealing second.  Terrell Brown came through with one out, smacking a single down the right field line to score Shedrick and cut the deficit to 5-3.  With Brown going on the pitch, Ruben Marrero knocked a single through the 5-6 hole that saw Brown move over to third, with Marrero advancing to second on the throw.  Brown would score on the next pitch as it bounced to the backstop, cutting the lead to 5-4 with the tying run standing at third with one away.  Marrero was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a fly ball to center, though, and the Jets trailed 5-4 going into the eighth.

Both teams threatened to score in the eighth inning, with the Hilltoppers getting a man at third and one away three pitches into the inning.  Brandon Roberts came in and slammed the door, getting the next two batters out to keep the score at 5-4.  Roberts worked 1 and 2/3 innings and kept the St. Edward's offense at bay, giving the Jets a chance to mount a ninth-inning rally.

Jarrod Flax led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, then moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Terrell Brown.  Flax would move over to third on another groundout, and the Jets had the tying run just 90 feet away with two men down.  John Branum worked the count to 3-2, then drew a walk, and Tanner Vinson was hit by the next pitch to load up the bases for Christian Dye.  Dye then delivered the game-winner for the Jets, smacking a single into right field to score two runs and give the Jets the 6-5 walk-off.

With the split, the Jets move to 13-15 on the season (10-12 Heartland).  They will look to take the rubber game of this conference series with St. Edward's tomorrow back at McCarthy Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
