Furr Leads Jets To Split With Dustdevils

Box Score WICHITA – Three was the magic number on Friday afternoon, with a pair of three-run rallies separating the Jets and the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International over two games.  Jake Furr's two-hitter in game one led the Jets to a 3-1 victory, while a three-run rally propelled TAMIU to a 4-1 win in the second game.

Game 1: Newman 3, TAMIU 1
The first game featured a battle of staff aces, with both starters going the distance in the shortened seven-inning game.  Neither team scored in the first three innings, with the Jets getting just one man in scoring position in the first three frames.  The Dustdevils broke the deadlock in the top of the fourth, getting two men on base with one away thanks to two walks.  After a flyout to center field to advance the runner to third, the next pitch bounced to the backstop to allow the runner to score and give TAMIU a 1-0 lead.

The Jets were quick to respond, though, with Ricky Sanchez wearing a pitch off the hip with one down and then moving over to second on a single through the 5-6 hole by Ruben MarreroTanner Vinson then came through with a single through the right side to score Sanchez, moving up to second as Ricky beat the throw home.  Jordan Ollenberger grounded out to second base to score Marrero and put the Jets up 2-1, and Tanner Vinson trotted home on a wild pitch two pitches later to give the Jets a 3-1 lead through four innings.

That lead was all that starter Jake Furr needed, as he shut the Dustdevils down over the next three innings to secure the 3-1 victory for the Jets.  Furr struck out three and allowed just two hits in picking up his fifth win of the season.

Game 2: TAMIU 4, Newman 1
After the first two innings passed without any scoring, the Dustdevils put up a three-spot in the third inning to separate themselves from the Jets.  A leadoff home run put TAMIU up 1-0, which was followed shortly by a single and a triple to plate another run and give the Dustdevils a runner at third with one away.  The three hitter lifted a ball to center field that was deep enough to allow the runner to tag up and score, and the Dustdevils held a 3-0 after two and a half innings of play.

TAMIU tacked on another run in the top of the fifth to go up 4-0.  After a leadoff single, the next batter laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second.  Tony Gonzalez got the next batter to ground out, but the three hitter for the Dustdevils lined a single over the shortstop to score the runner from second.

Newman finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, with Tanner Vinson reaching base to lead off the inning on an error by the shortstop, and moving to second as the ball trickled into left field.  Jordan Ollenberger drew a walk, and John Branum sacrificed the runners over to put the Jets in business with runners at second and third and one away.  Terrell Brown reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop to score Vinson, and the Jets were on the board now trailing 4-1.  TAMIU brought in a reliever who struck out the next batter, though, and the threat was over for the Jets.

Dustdevils reliever Jared Curnel came in and converted the seven-out save, limiting the Jets to just one hit over the final two frames to seal the 4-1 victory for TAMIU.

With the split, the Jets move to 17-18 on the season (13-14 Heartland).  They will look to notch a series victory in the rubber game tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
