Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – The Jets put up runs in four of the first five innings and never trailed in a 9-1 win to seal a series victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon.
Jordon Jenkins led the charge for the Newman offense with a 3-for-3 effort that included an RBI and three runs scored.
Newman wasted no time getting on the board, with
Ben Wagner and
Jarrod Flax both drawing walks to start the top of the first inning.
Ricky Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt that the pitcher threw into right field and allowed Wagner to score, and just like that the Jets took a 1-0 lead three batters in.
After Tony Gonzalez sent the Aggies down in order in the bottom of the inning, Jenkins got things going again with a one-out single, then scooted over to third on a single by
Jordan Ollenberger.
Tanner Vinson flied out to right field to plate Jenkins on the sacrifice, and the Jets led 2-0 going to the bottom of the second.
Jenkins and Ollenberger teamed up again in the fourth to add to the Jet lead. After Jenkins drew a leadoff walk, Ollenberger smacked a double into right center to put the Jets in business with runners at second and third and nobody out. After two quick outs,
Jarrod Flax laid a bunt down the first base line that the catcher picked up and whipped into right field, allowing both runners to score and extending the Jet lead to 4-0.
Newman doubled its lead in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of two leadoff walks and stringing three hits together to score four runs and stretch the score to 8-0. That was more than enough for starter Tony Gonzalez, who baffled the Aggies all day, surrendering just three hits and striking out four over seven innings. The lone run for OPSU came on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all the scoring that the Aggies would do on the day as Gonzalez picked up the win and improved to 4-3 on the season.
With the win, the Jets move to 15-17 on the season (12-14 Heartland). For their next contest Newman will host Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
