WACO, Texas – For the third straight year, the Newman athletic programs achieved the highest GPA in the Heartland Conference. NU's programs combined for a 3.26 grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year. This is Newman's sixth title in the last seven years.
"We should all celebrate this unprecedented performance of sustainability of what Newman University is really all about," Newman Athletic Director Vic Trilli said. "I am really proud to be the director of athletics at Newman University for all the right reasons. Thank you to everyone in our university community for your dedication and the commitment you made to be the best."
The Newman athletic programs had the highest grade point average for both men's and women's teams. The women's program totaled a 3.4 GPA, and the men's programs totaled a 3.12 GPA, which tied them with St. Edward's for the men's title.
Of the 13 Heartland Conference sports, NU had the highest GPA in six of them. Women's golf, which advanced to the NCAA Super Regional, finished with the highest GPA in the conference with a stellar 3.83 GPA. The Heartland Conference champion men's cross country team also won the GPA award with a 3.26 GPA. Baseball, softball, and men's and women's tennis also earned the highest GPAs in the conference.
