Volleyball’s Comeback Falls Short in Five-Set Loss to LCU

Box Score WICHITA – After falling behind 2-0, the Newman volleyball team evened the match at 2 sets each, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling in the fifth set, 15-13, to Lubbock Christian on Satuday (Sept. 21) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Lady Jets dropped to 3-5 and 1-3 in the Heartland Conference.

In two close sets to start the match, NU fell 25-22 in set one and again in set two by the same 25-22 score.

Down 2-0, the Lady Jets dominated in the third and fourth sets. NU pushed out to an 8-2 set three advantage on a kill by freshman middle hitter Mali Wright. The Lady Jets pulled out to a nine-point lead at 19-10 on another Wright kill. For the rest of the set, NU stayed in control, winning 25-18.

In the fourth set, the score was close at 14-12 in favor of NU, then the Lady Jets made a 10-3 run to get to set point at 24-15. Gaylynn Jones had three kills during the run and Ashley Gonzalez had back-to-back kills to push it to 23-15. After two LCU points, a block by Ashley Gonzalez and Jarin Braithwait ended the set and lifted NU to a 25-17 set win.

In a tight fifth set, both teams traded points until LCU pushed to a three-point 11-8 lead, the largest for either team in the set. Three straight NU points, including a Alexis Roecker kill, tied the score at 11-11. With the score still knotted at 12-12, the Chaps scored two points to make it 14-12 and give LCU two opportunities at match point. Jones put down a kill to pull the Lady Jets to within one at 14-13, but a LCU kill lifted them to the 15-13 set win and the 3-2 match win.

Wright's match-high of 18 kills led the Lady Jets, and she hit .378. Three other Lady Jets hit double digits in kills with Jeana Farruggia at 13, Jones at 11 and Braithwait at 10. Jones and Tori Alderson both had a team-high 19 digs. Alexus Litts led NU with 37 assists.

NU welcomes Barclay College to Fugate Gymnasium on Tuesday (Sept. 24) for a 7 p.m. match.
