Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Newman men's soccer team opened the season with a tough road test against No. 6-ranked Rockhurst. The Hawks were too much, defeating the Jets, 5-0, on Friday (Sept. 6) night at Bourke Field. Rockhurst moved to 1-0 and the Jets dropped to 0-1.
The Hawks scored three first half goals, taking a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Rockhurst doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the 40th minute on a header off a corner kick. The Hawks ended the half with a goal in the 44th minute on a breakaway from 15 yards.
RU added two goals in the second half. The first goal of the second half came in the 65th minute on a shot from 18 yards. The final tally came in the 85th minute for the 5-0 score.
NU was outshot in the game, 34-9, including 20-2 in shots on goal.
The Jets return to the pitch on Sunday (Sept. 8) at William Jewell. The non-conference game starts at 2 p.m. in Liberty, Mo.
