Box Score WICHITA – The Jets defeated the Hornets of Emporia State on Wednesday night, winning 7-6 in a back-and-forth battle that saw the lead change hands five times.
Mitchell Beaudreau went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, and leadoff man
Tyler Bugner went 1-for-2 with two walks and scored three times en route to the Jets' first walkoff win of the season.
The first two innings of the game passed by rather quickly, with both teams notching one hit apiece but not threatening to score. The Hornets finally got to Newman starter
Cody Frederickson in the top of the third, stringing together a trio of hits to score one run and put men at first and second with one away. Frederickson walked the next batter to load the bases, but worked his way out of the jam with a pop up to second and a fielder's choice. Still, the Jets trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the third.
Newman wasted no time in responding though, with Beaudreau leading off the inning with an infield single. Bugner bounced a single up the middle one batter later, and the Jets had the makings of their own rally with men at first and second with
Ricky Sanchez coming to bat. The speedster laid a bunt down the third baseline, which the pitcher picked up bounced the throw to first, allowing Beaudreau to score and enabling Bugner to score all the way from first base, putting the Jets on top 2-1 after three.
Emporia State would retake the lead in the top of the fifth, using three hits and a sacrifice fly to score two runs and put them back up 3-2. The Jets were again equal to the task though, scoring one run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a sac fly from Sanchez that locked the game up at 3-3. The Hornets would threaten again in the top of the seventh, loading up the bases with one out and looking to break the game open.
Joe Cannady came in to put out the fire though, getting the first batter to foul out and sending the next batter down on strikes to keep the score even.
The Jets would retake the lead in the bottom of the seventh, with
Tyler Bugner reaching on a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Jarrod Flax bounced a ball into the 5-6 hole and beat the throw to first, with Bugner scoring when the first baseman couldn't scoop the throw to put the Jets back up 4-3 with just two frames left.
Emporia State would not be silenced so easily though, with the first batter of the ninth inning singling and advancing to third on an outfield error, then scoring on a double by the second baseman to tie the game up 4-4. After a single and two walks plated another run,
Kevin Luman was brought in from the bullpen to stop the bleeding. Luman did his job, getting the next batter to ground into a 3-2 fielder's choice at the plate, and striking out the catcher on a full count to end the inning and keep the Jets within one.
Things looked bleak for the Jets, down to their last out with nobody on as Bugner again stepped up to bat. Bugner was hit by a pitch to breathe some life into Newman, and
Ricky Sanchez did not disappoint, smashing a triple down the right field line to score Bugner from first and once again tie the game up. The next batter would fly out to end the inning, sending the game into extras.
Though Luman got two quick outs in the top of the tenth, the two-hitter for the Hornets singled with two outs and stole second to get Emporia State going. The first baseman worked the count to 2-2, then laced a single into left field for the RBI and put the Hornets back on top 6-5. Luman got the next batter to fly out, and again the Jets went into the bottom of the inning needing at least one to keep playing.
Kyle Johnston started the rally for the Jets, singling through the 3-4 hole to lead off the inning and advancing to second on a sac bunt by
Alex Lator.
Andrew Standish singled into left field to put men at first and third, and
Garrett Thomas worked a full-count walk to load up the bases for
Mitchell Beaudreau. Beaudreau came through for Newman, knocking a single through the left side to score a run and knot the game up at 6-6 with the bases still loaded for the Jets. Two pitches later, Standish would scamper home as the ball squirted between the legs of the catcher, bringing home the winning run and securing the 7-6 walkoff.
Kevin Luman picked up the win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 innings to keep the Jets in the game, and improving to 1-0 on the season.
With the win, the Jets are now 4-4 on the season (0-0 Heartland). They will look to get over the .500 mark for the first time this season this weekend, when they travel to Abilene, Texas to take on McMurry for a three-game series and the start of Heartland Conference play. The first game of their Friday doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m., with the third game set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
