Box Score WICHITA – Offense was the key in the Jets' doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on Thursday afternoon, with the teams totaling 42 runs in the two games. The Chaparrals smacked 21 hits in game one en route to a 17-7 win, but the Jets answered back with 14 runs of their own and run-ruled Lubbock Christian 14-4 in the second game.
Tyler Bugner went 6-for-6 with three walks and four RBIs on the day.
Game 1: Lubbock Christian 17, Newman 7
The Chaparrals set the offensive tone early, coming out of the gate with four straight hits to plate three runs before the fans had even settled into their seats. Newman starter
John Branum kept things under control though, getting the next batter to ground into a double play and then inducing a groundout to end the inning. The Jets responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, with
Tyler Bugner and
Ricky Sanchez knocking back-to-back singles through the left side to get things rolling.
Jarrod Flax reached on a fielder's choice and
Kyle Johnston was hit by a pitch, and the Jets had them loaded with one away. The next pitch bounced away from the catcher as Sanchez scampered home, and the throw back to the plate squirted away from the pitcher and allowed Flax to score all the way from second. Still, the Jets trailed 3-2 through one.
Lubbock Christian tacked on another run in the top of the second inning, then strung four hits together in the top of the third to add three more runs, making the score 7-2 going to the bottom of the third. Newman got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth when
Andrew Standish singled with two outs, then scored all the way from first on a 3-2 double to left by Bugner.
The Jets' momentum did not last for long though, as the Chaparrals exploded for seven runs in the fifth, firing off six hits in a row and knocking eight in the inning. When the dust had settled, Lubbock Christian was in the driver's seat with a 14-3 lead. Newman would not go down without a fight though, as
Kyle Johnston scorched a double to right center on the first pitch of the inning.
Mitchell Beaudreau blooped a single down the right field line on the following pitch, then
Jordan Ollenberger walked and
Alex Lator singled to load the bases up again for the Jets. Newman couldn't cash in though, and two batters later Beaudreau was still standing at third base as
Tyler Bugner stepped up to bat. Bugner finally delivered the hit for the Jets, smacking a single into left field to score two runs and put the score at 14-6.
The teams exchanged runs in the sixth, and the Jets trailed 15-7 going into the final frame of the shortened seven-inning game. Lubbock Christian tacked on two more for good measure in the top of the seventh, and the Jets could not cash in on a two-out bases loaded chance in the bottom of the inning, dropping game one 17-7.
Game 2: Newman 14, Lubbock Christian 4
Game two was much of the same story told in reverse, with the Jets putting up a crooked number in the third inning on their way to a run-rule victory.
Tyler Bugner again set the table in the bottom of the first, bouncing a single through the right side and moving up to second on a deep fly ball to center. After
Jarrod Flax laid down a perfect drag bunt to put men at the corners,
Kyle Johnston hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Bugner and give the Jets the 1-0 lead.
Lubbock Christian was keen to answer, scoring one run in the second and third to go up 2-1 as the Jets came to bat in the bottom of the third.
TJ Shedrick started the rally with a single to center, then swiped second base before Bugner worked a full-count walk. After both men moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch,
Ricky Sanchez lined a single into center field to score Shedrick and knot the game up 2-2. After
Jarrod Flax reached first when the catcher couldn't handle a bunt,
Kyle Johnston worked a walk to move everybody up and put Newman ahead 3-2.
Alex Lator followed up by lacing a single into left field to score two, and
Coy Chafin singled up the middle to score two more and make the score 7-2 Newman through three.
A two-out double would score one run for the Chaparrals in the top of the fourth, but the Jets tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning. Bugner worked a walk to lead off, then moved to third when
Ricky Sanchez singled to right and was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.
Jarrod Flax flared a single over the shortstop to score Bugner, then stole second and moved over to third on a wild pitch.
Kyle Johnston grounded out to the second baseman two pitches later, and the Jets led 9-3 going into the fifth. The teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning, and
Brandon Roberts tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief to keep the score at 10-4 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Jordan Ollenberger reached on an error to lead off the inning, and
Coy Chafin blooped a ball into short left field to give the Jets runners at first and second with nobody out.
Ben Wagner laid down a sacrifice bunt to move up the runners, but reached first when the first baseman couldn't handle the throw, allowing Ollenberger to score and putting men at the corners.
TJ Shedrick and
Tyler Bugner singled back-to-back to score two more runs, and the Jets had the bases loaded and led 13-4 still with none away. After the next two batters flied out,
Alex Lator singled into no-man's land in short center field, plating Shedrick and giving the Jets the 14-4 run rule victory.
Jacob Furr picked up the win in game 2, scattering nine hits and four runs over six innings while striking out four.
Brandon Roberts pitched a scoreless seventh and had two punchouts in relief.
Alex Lator and
Kyle Johnston both had three RBIs apiece in the win, and
Tyler Bugner scored three times and reached base safely all five times at bat.
With the split, the Jets are now 7-6 on the season (3-2 Heartland). They will look to take the series with Lubbock Christian in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. back at McCarthy Field.
