Jets Fall To Chaps 7-4 In Rubber Game

Box Score WICHITA – Lubbock Christian was able to pull away in a back-and-forth battle that had the score tied four different times and secure the series victory on Friday afternoon against the Jets.  Kyle Johnston went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the loss.

After Newman starter Zak Mickens sent the Chaparrals down in order in the top of the first, Tyler Bugner singled into short left field and swiped second base to get the Jet offense going.  After Bugner moved over to third on a groundout, Kyle Johnston laced a single into left to score the run and put Newman up 1-0.

The Chaparrals tied the game up in the top of the second, taking advantage of two defensive miscues and using an infield single to score a run and tie the game up.  Newman struck back in the bottom of the inning though, with Coy Chafin and Mitchell Beaudreau both smacking singles to lead off the inning.  Ben Wagner laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, then reached base safely when the pitcher's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag.  The Jets looked to be in business with the bases loaded and nobody out, but could only scratch one across on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Bugner that scored Chafin.  Still, Newman held a 2-1 lead through the first two frames.

Lubbock Christian was equal to the task though, as the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single to give the Chaps men at the corners with nobody out.  Another single would score the tying run, and a deep fly ball to center field scored the go ahead run two batters later to put Lubbock Christian up 3-2.  The Jets wasted no time in tying up the ballgame though, as Jarrod Flax lofted a single over the shortstop's head and stole second base to get things going.  Kyle Johnston bounced a single up the middle to score Flax, and the game was deadlocked at 3-3.

The fourth inning was almost identical for the two teams – both the Chaps and the Jets had a man reach base and steal second, then had a two-out single to score the run.  Through four innings of play, the score was tied up at 4-4.  The Chaparrals were not satisfied with the tie though, as they knocked two more runs in with two men out in the top of the fifth.  After hitting the first batter of the inning, Mickens got the next batter to pop up and then struck out the following batter, but a double and a single would score two runs and put Lubbock Christian up 6-4.

Glen Warrick came on in relief for the Chaparrals, and tossed three innings of scoreless ball to secure the win for Lubbock Christian, who added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth.  Despite having runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings, the Jets were missing that clutch hit and could not push a run across.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 7-7 on the season (3-3 Heartland).  They will look to get back over .500 on Tuesday, when they travel to Topeka for a nonconference matchup with Washburn University.  First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
