Zak Mickens threw his second complete game of the year and
Mitchell Beaudreau and
Kyle Johnston had 3 RBIs apiece as the Jets defeated the Falcons of UTPB 13-2 to secure the series victory.
Tyler Bugner went 3-for-4 and scored 3 times, and
Ricky Sanchez went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs in the run-rule win.
The Jets jumped ahead to an early lead and never looked back, scoring in every inning but the third as
Zak Mickens improved to 3-2 on the season.
Ricky Sanchez laid down a bunt to start things with two out in the bottom of the first, then reached second when the catcher's throw bounced into center field.
Kyle Johnston promptly doubled to right field to trade places with Sanchez, and
Andrew Standish singled Johnston home to put Newman up 2-0 after one.
The Jets tacked on another run in the second, loading up the bases thanks to two catcher's interference calls and a single.
Ricky Sanchez bounced a ball up the middle that the second baseman couldn't handle, and the Jets led 3-0 through the first two innings. The Falcons struck back in the top of the fourth, using back-to-back two-out doubles to score two runs and cut Newman's lead to 3-2. The Jets responded in the bottom of the inning though, loading up the bases with nobody out thanks to singles from
Tyler Bugner and
Ricky Sanchez and a
Mitchell Beaudreau hit by pitch.
Kyle Johnston grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Bugner, and
Alex Lator laced a single into left field to knock in two more runs and extend the Jet lead to 6-2 through four.
Newman then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. After
Jarrod Flax and
Tyler Bugner reached base with one out,
Mitchell Beaudreau tripled into the right center gap to score both runners to make the score 8-2.
Ricky Sanchez doubled to left center on the next pitch to score Beaudreau, and
Kyle Johnston followed suit with a double of his own to score Sanchez and make the score 10-2.
Jordan Ollenberger then knocked a two-out single into right field that scored Johnston, and the Jets held a comfortable 11-2 lead through five innings.
Bugner and Beaudreau teamed up again in the bottom of the sixth, with Bugner doubling in
Jarrod Flax to score a run, and Beaudreau bouncing a single through the left side to score Bugner and put Newman up 13-2 going into the seventh inning.
The Falcons loaded up the bases in the top of the seventh, but
Zak Mickens fanned two batters and got the final batter to fly out to Standish in right field to complete the run-rule victory. Mickens scattered nine hits over seven innings while striking out eight as he picked up his third win of the season.
With the win, the Jets improve to 9-8 on the season (5-4 Heartland). They play host to the Gorillas of Pittsburg State tomorrow afternoon in a nonconference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. back at McCarthy Field.
