Box Score WICHITA – The Jets put up 9 runs in the first two innings of Tuesday's nonconference matchup with Pittsburg State, then tacked on four more runs in the fourth as they cruised to a 13-8 victory.
Alex Lator went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, and
Jordan Ollenberger went 3-for-5 while knocking in three runs.
Newman wasted no time in getting things going in the bottom of the first, with
Tyler Bugner and
Mitchell Beaudreau both reaching on singles to start the inning. After
Ricky Sanchez sacrificed them over,
Kyle Johnston grounded out to second base to plate Bugner and give the Jets the lead. After
Andrew Standish drew a walk,
Jordan Ollenberger laced a double down the right field line that scored Beaudreau and Standish, and the Jets held a 3-0 lead through the first frame.
After starter
Cody Frederickson escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the second, the Jets exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning that largely put the game out of reach. Three consecutive hits got the inning started for the Jets – a double from
Alex Lator, a single from
Garrett Thomas and a double from
Jarrod Flax scored one run and put men at second and third with nobody out.
Tyler Bugner bounced a ball to the drawn-in second baseman, but
Garrett Thomas beat the throw home and the Jets went up 5-0 as they still had none away. After the next batter flied out,
Ricky Sanchez singled through the left side of the infield to score Flax and make it 6-0. Sanchez took off for second on the ensuing pitch, then moved up to third as the catcher's throw sailed into center field and enabled Bugner to score.
Kyle Johnston lined a single into right field to knock in Sanchez, then moved up to second on a wild pitch and over to third on a groundout.
Jordan Ollenberger then grounded a ball down the third base line that ricocheted off the bag and away from the third baseman, allowing Johnston to score and making the score 9-0 in favor of the Jets after two.
The Jets were back at it in the bottom of the fourth inning, stringing together four more hits and taking advantage of two Gorilla errors to tack on four more runs to the lead.
Ricky Sanchez led off the inning by drawing a walk and swiping second base, and then came around to score when
Kyle Johnston lofted a ball into right center that kicked off the center fielder's glove. Johnston would move over to third base on a groundout, then scored when
Alex Lator singled through the 5-6 hole with two men out to put the score at 11-0. After
Garrett Thomas flared a single into short left field,
Jarrod Flax reached on an infield single, but the shortstop's throw was both late and wide of the bag, which allowed Lator to score and Thomas to move up to third as the ball squirted towards the dugout.
Tyler Bugner then singled off of the pitcher, lacing a ball off of his glove that knocked in Thomas and gave the Jets a comfortable 13-0 lead through the first four innings.
Cody Frederickson had been flirting with danger through the first four innings, but the Gorillas finally got to him in the top of the fifth. After the leadoff batter reached on an error by the shortstop, Pitt State strung three hits and a walk together to score four runs and make the score 13-4. Newman threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth, loading up the bases with two singles and a walk, but couldn't cash in and the score remained 13-4 going to the sixth inning.
Blake Brommel tossed a scoreless sixth inning in relief of Frederickson, but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh after striking out the first two batters. A single, walk, and hit by pitch loaded up the bases for the Gorillas, and another single scored one run and made the score 13-5 and knocked Brommel out of the game. Freshman
Jarett Price came on in relief and got the next batter to roll over to shortstop to end the threat.
Price tossed a scoreless eighth inning to preserve the lead, striking out two in his first career appearance. The Gorillas mounted a bit of a rally in the ninth inning, taking advantage of a hit by pitch and using three singles and a couple of wild pitches to score three more runs, but
Joe Cannady came in to put out the fire and induced two groundouts to secure the 13-8 victory.
Cody Frederickson picked up his second win of the season, tossing five innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out five.
With the win, the Jets are now 10-8 on the season (5-4 Heartland). They are off until next Tuesday, when the Ichabods of Washburn University come to town for a nonconference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
