Sanchez And Johnston Homer As Jets Rout Ichabods 15-5

Box Score
WICHITA – After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first, the Jets fought back to tie the game up, then pulled away with a nine-run fourth inning to run-rule Washburn University on Tuesday afternoon at McCarthy Field.  Ricky Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a three-run bomb, and Kyle Johnston went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a two-run home run of his own.

Washburn came out swinging to start the game, batting around in the top of the first on their way to taking an early 4-0 lead.  Four hits and four walks led to four Ichabod runs, and the Jets came up to bat with some work to do.  Mitchell Beaudreau walked and moved up to second base on a bunt, then scored when Kyle Johnston scorched a ball off of the second baseman's glove to make the score 4-1 in favor of Washburn going to the top of the second.

After Cody Frederickson retired the Ichabods without a run in the top of the inning, the Jets tied the game up in the bottom of the second without recording a hit.  Alex Lator and Tyler Evans reached base to start the inning on a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively, and then pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third with nobody out.  Jarrod Flax then flied out to the right fielder to score Lator, and the Jets trailed 4-2 with one away.  Tyler Bugner worked a full-count walk, then advanced to second on a ball that bounced off the catcher's mask.  The next pitch squirted to the backstop and allowed Bugner to move to third and Evans to score, making it 4-3.  Mitchell Beaudreau then drew a walk, and a third wild pitch scored Bugner and knotted the game up 4-4.

Washburn would retake the lead in the top of the third, going up 5-4 when an errant pickoff throw led to an RBI groundout for Connor Crimmins.  The Jets went down in order in the bottom of the inning, but came roaring back in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead for good.  Jarrod Flax was hit by a pitch to start things off, moving up to second on a wild pitch to put the tying run in scoring position with one out.  Tyler Bugner then dropped a bunt down the third base line that the pitcher fielded, but threw into right field and allowed Flax to score and saw Bugner move up to second.  After Mitchell Beaudreau drew a walk, Ricky Sanchez smashed an 0-1 breaking ball over the right field fence to put Newman ahead 8-5.  Kyle Johnston wasted no time in reigniting the rally, knocking a single up the middle and advancing to second on a wild pitch.  Johnston then made it to third on ball four to Andrew Standish, which put men at the corners still with just one out.  Standish took off for second on the ensuing pitch to draw a throw, but the shortstop cut the throw off and whipped it back home to try and nail Johnston attempting to score.  Johnston was caught in a pickle, but was able to score when the catcher was caught spectating and called for obstruction.  Jordan Ollenberger was hit by a pitch and Alex Lator reached on an error to load up the bases, then Garrett Thomas doubled through the right side of the infield to score two runs and put Newman up 11-5.  After Jarrod Flax drew a walk to load up the bases again, Tyler Bugner grounded a ball to second that bounced through the second baseman's legs, allowing Standish and Ollenberger to score.  When the dust had settled, the Jets were sitting in the driver's seat with a 13-5 lead through four innings.

Newman tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead.  Ricky Sanchez led off the inning by bouncing a single up the middle, and three pitches later Kyle Johnston launched his first home run of the year over the fence in right center to make it 15-5.  Brandon Roberts worked a scoreless sixth inning, and Tanner Lee tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the run-rule victory.

Brandon Roberts picked up the win in relief, notching his first win of the season.  Roberts threw four scoreless innings of three-hit ball, striking out two and walking one.

With the win, the Jets improve to 11-8 on the season (5-4 Heartland).  Winners of four of their last five, the Jets will look to continue their success at home tomorrow afternoon when they host the Cardinals of William Jewell.  Ryan Skoubo will be on the bump for Newman, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
