Jets Wrap Up Homestand With 10-0 Win Over Cardinals

Box Score WICHITA – Mitchell Beaudreau went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Alex Lator went 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run bomb as the Jets rattled off their second straight run-rule win, this time against William Jewell.  Ryan Skoubo, Blake Brommel, Kevin Luman, and Tanner Lee combined for a six-hit shutout in the 10-0 victory.

The Jets wasted no time in getting on the board, putting up two in the first to take an early lead.  Mitchell Beaudreau and Ricky Sanchez smacked back-to-back singles to get things going with one out.  One batter later, Andrew Standish smashed a double off the wall in left center to score both runners and put Newman ahead 2-0.  After Ryan Skoubo sent the Cardinals down in order, the Jets would put up another two-spot in the bottom of the second.  Jarrod Flax reached on a fielder's choice with two out, and after Tyler Bugner worked a walk, the speedsters pulled off a double steal to give Newman two men in scoring position.  Mitchell Beaudreau then bounced a ball into the 3-4 hole that the second baseman made a diving stop on, but Beaudreau beat the throw to first as Flax scored and Bugner made it home all the way from second, beating the first baseman's throw home.  The Jets held a 4-0 lead through the first two innings and did not look back.

The Cardinals threatened in the third and fourth, both times getting men into scoring position, but Ryan Skoubo pitched his way out of trouble and kept William Jewell scoreless.  Newman tacked on insurance runs in the 4th and 5th to extend the lead to 6-0.  Alex Lator drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fourth, then Garrett Thomas reached on catcher's interference to give the Jets runners at first and second with nobody out.  After Jarrod Flax sacrificed the runners over, Tyler Bugner lofted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Lator.  In the bottom of the fifth, Ricky Sanchez channeled his inner Jackie Robinson, leading off with a walk, then stealing second and third before scoring on a balk call after successfully discombobulating the pitcher.

Blake Brommel, Kevin Luman, and Tanner Lee each tossed a scoreless inning to get the game to the bottom of the eighth, where the Jets would put up four runs to secure the run-rule.  Jordan Ollenberger wasted no time getting the rally going, as he laced a leadoff double down the right field line.  Alex Lator then deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field fence, and just like that the Jets led 8-0.  Tyler Evans and Jarrod Flax both singled to center field to start things up again, and Coy Chafin doubled down the left field line to score Evans and put the decisive tenth run at third base.  Ben Wagner then flied out to right on a 2-2 pitch, allowing Flax to scamper home with the tenth run for a run-rule walkoff.

Ryan Skoubo picked up his first win of the season, throwing four innings of three-hit ball while striking out five.  Blake Brommel tossed two hitless innings and struck out three.

The Jets wrap up a nine-game homestand on a positive note, having scored ten or more runs in their last four games and winning five of their last six.  Newman is now 12-8 on the season (5-4 Heartland).  They will look to carry some momentum into this weekend's series, when they travel to Austin, Tex., to take on Heartland Conference rival St. Edwards.  John Branum will be on the mound for the Jets in game one of the Friday doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 pm.
