No. 15 SEU Snaps NU’s Four-Game Winning Streak, Takes Two from Jets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Friday (March 31) to No. 15 St. Edward's at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Jets lost game one, 2-1, and fell in game two, 8-4. The Jets dropped to 12-10 and 5-6 in the Heartland Conference.
 
SEU 2, NU 1
 
A strong pitching performance from John Branum wasn't enough in game one as the Jets fell 2-1. Branum allowed only two runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. He totaled one strike out.
 
The one Jet run scored in the fifth inning as TJ Shedrick scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1.
 
The Hilltoppers plated runs in the first and fourth innings for the 2-1 victory. A sacrifice fly in the first inning put SEU up 1-0. The Hilltoppers scored what would be the game-winning run in the fourth inning on a single through the left side with the SEU base runner scoring from third base.
 
Tyler Bugner and Mitchell Beaufreau both went 2-for-3 in game one.
 
SEU 8, NU 4
 
SEU scored six runs in the first two innings to pull out to a 8-4 win in the nightcap. The Hilltoppers plated four runs in the first runs and added two runs in the second inning for a 6-0 advantage after two complete innings.
 
The Jets got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a RBI from Jordan Ollenberger. Andrew Standish scored.
 
In the fifth inning, NU plated two runs on a two-RBI double from Standish. He brought home Bugner and Ben Wagner for a 7-3 score.
 
NU added one run in the ninth inning as Jarrod Flax doubled to right center field. His RBI double plated Wagner from first base.
 
Standish went 2-for-3 in the nightcap with two RBI. Wagner was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
 
The series concludes tomorrow (March 22) with one game at 1 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
