Box Score WICHITA – A leadoff single from the first batter of the game was the only hit that
Zak Mickens allowed on the afternoon, as he tossed a complete game one-hitter and the Jets clinched the series over Rogers State 5-1 on Saturday afternoon. Mickens faced just two batters over the minimum and struck out seven in the win.
The leadoff man for the Hillcats singled and advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw, then scored when the next batter grounded out to shortstop. That would be the only runner to make it past first base in the game for Rogers State, but they had a 1-0 lead going to the bottom half of the first. The Jets threatened but couldn't score, and so Mickens went back to work in the top of the second. Mickens retired the side in order – a common theme for him in this game – and the Jets came up to bat in the bottom of the second still trailing 1-0. They wasted no time in getting on the board though, with
Andrew Standish lacing a single up the middle and then scoring when
Garrett Thomas launched a home run over the fence in right to put Newman ahead 2-1.
Jarrod Flax walked with two outs and stole second, then scored when
Tyler Bugner bounced a single up the box to put the Jets up 3-1 after two.
That lead was plenty for
Zak Mickens, who fired off four straight 1-2-3 innings to keep the Hillcats at bay and allow Newman to build on the lead. The Jets tacked on one in the fourth and one in the fifth, with the catching tandem of
Mitchell Beaudreau and
Jordan Ollenberger picking up the RBI in each inning to put Newman ahead 5-1 after five innings. The only other baserunner for Rogers State would come in the top of the sixth with a two-out hit by pitch, but Mickens retired the next ten batters he faced to seal the victory for the Jets.
Garrett Thomas went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run and a two-run dinger to fuel the offense for the Jets.
Zak Mickens was the story of the game though, retiring 17 batters in a row at one point as he picked up his fourth win of the season. Mickens struck out seven Hillcats and needed just 94 pitches to complete the victory.
Thanks to Mickens' gem, the Jets are now 14-13 on the year (7-8 Heartland). They will look to build on the series victory and take some momentum into the coming week, which holds five games for them – four of which are on the road in Oklahoma. Newman starts off with a trip to Alva on Tuesday to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State before returning home to host Fort Hays on Wednesday evening. They will then go on the road to Oklahoma Christian next weekend for another conference series. First pitch in Alva on Tuesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Myers Stadium.
