Box Score ALVA, Okla. – Despite knocking 13 hits on the day and loading up the bases twice, the Jets could not cash in on their scoring opportunities and fell to the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
TJ Shedrick,
Jarrod Flax, and
Andrew Standish each had three hits in the loss.
The first inning passed without any scoring, but the Jets would threaten in the top of the second inning after
Andrew Standish led off the inning with a ringing double off the left field wall. Standish moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt, but the Jets couldn't cash in as the next two batters struck out and grounded out to end the inning. The Rangers got on the board in the bottom half of the frame, loading up the bases on two singles and a walk, then cashing in with a two-out single to plate two runs.
Jacob Furr got the next batter to fly out to right and stop the bleeding, but NWOSU still went into the third leading 2-0.
Newman wasted no time in responding, with
Jarrod Flax leading off with an infield single to first, then moving up to second when
Tyler Bugner bounced a single through the left side.
Mitchell Beaudreau worked a full-count walk to load them up, and
Alex Lator bounced into a fielder's choice to second that enabled Flax to score.
Kyle Johnston came up and ripped a ball to first base that ricocheted off the first baseman's glove, scoring Bugner as Johnston beat the pitcher to first base. Furr worked a 1-2-3 third inning, and the game was locked up at 2-2 through three.
NU threatened again in the top of the fourth, using three straight singles to load up the bases with one out. Chase Randall came on in relief for the Rangers and retired the next two batters though, keeping the score at 2-2. The score would not remain that way for long though, as DH Daniel Bolanos launched a one-out home run to left center to put the Rangers up 3-2 through four. NWOSU would tack on three more in the bottom of the fifth, utilizing a leadoff walk to get things going. The Rangers strung together a single, a double, and another single to plate two runs, then used a sacrifice fly to score the third and give them a 6-2 lead.
The Rangers' bullpen closed out the final four innings without surrendering a run, despite the Jets having men in scoring position in each of the final four frames. The biggest scoring chance for Newman came in the top of the eighth, when the Jets loaded the bases with one away, but again they were missing the timely hit they had been searching for and could not cash in as the Rangers held on for the 6-2 victory.
The Jets are 14-14 with the loss (7-8 Heartland). They return to action tomorrow night, when they play host to Fort Hays State in another nonconference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
