Strong Starting Pitching Propels Jets To Split With TAMIU

Box Score LAREDO, Tex. – Newman's starting pitchers held Texas A&M International to just three runs over fifteen innings, but the Jets' offense struggled in the first game as they settled for a split of the double dip with the Dustdevils on Friday.  Alex Lator and Ricky Sanchez both knocked three hits on the day.

Game 1: TAMIU 2, Newman 1
The Dustdevils struck first in the game, after shortstop Michael Colorado led off with a single and moved up on a sacrifice bunt.  The next batter doubled to left center to knock him in, and the Jets trailed 1-0 through three innings.  Newman retaliated in the top of the fifth though, with Alex Lator knocking a single through the right side to get things rolling.  After Lator moved up to second on a bunt, Jordan Ollenberger smashed a hanging breaking ball off the right field wall for a double, scoring Lator and knotting the score up at 1-1.

A&M International wasted no time in retaking the lead, with Colorado smacking a one-out double over the head of center fielder Ricky Sanchez and scoring on a single to right by the leadoff hitter.  The damage had been done though, as the Dustdevil pen came on to close out the next two innings.  Newman threatened in the top of the seventh, loading up the bases on a single and two walks, but could not capitalize and fell to TAMIU 2-1 in the first game.  John Branum took the tough luck loss in the game, surrendering two runs on eight hits while striking out two in tossing a complete game.

Game 2: Newman 4, TAMIU 1
The Jets came out with a vengeance in the second game, putting up two runs in the first as they never trailed in the 4-1 win.  Mitchell Beaudreau and Andrew Standish both singled, and Kyle Johnston reached on an error to load the bases up with two outs.  Alex Lator then came up and lined a single up the middle, scoring Beaudreau and Standish and giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.

That lead was plenty for Newman starter Cody Frederickson, who cruised through seven innings and allowed just one run.  The lone run came in the bottom of the third, after a leadoff triple led to a run thanks to a sacrifice fly later in the inning.  That was the only real threat Frederickson faced in his seven innings of work, as he scattered six hits and struck out five.

Newman tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth, loading up the bases on a single and two hit batters.  Mitchell Beaudreau flied out to center field to plate a run, and Ricky Sanchez blooped a ball into right center to score another run and make it 4-1 Jets.  Brandon Roberts came on in relief of Frederickson in the eighth and sent down the six batters he faced, striking out four batters on the way to picking up his second save of the season.

The split puts the Jets at 17-18 on the season, and 10-10 in conference.  They will look to capture the series victory tomorrow, when Zak Mickens toes the mound in the rubber match.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
