Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – The Jets battled the elements just as much as the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday, with the wind howling in and knocking down many would-be base hits, turning balls in the gap into fly outs consistently throughout the double dip. Despite the wind, the Jets were able to sweep the doubleheader, taking the first game 7-1 and winning the second one 3-0 in ten innings.
Tyler Bugner went 5-for-8 with two runs and two RBIs to lead the Jets to their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Game 1: Newman 7, OPSU 1The Jets went down quietly in the first two frames, but OPSU got on the board in the bottom of the second, using an error and two singles to plate what would be their only run of the day. The Jets wasted no time in retaliating though, and
Garrett Thomas got things rolling in the top of the third with a leadoff double to left field. After Thomas moved up to third on a groundout,
Tyler Bugner bounced a single through the left side to score him and make it 1-1. Bugner swiped second and third on consecutive pitches before
Mitchell Beaudreau drew a walk, and
Ricky Sanchez followed through with a single through the right side of the infield to score Bugner and put Newman ahead 2-1. A fielder's choice moved Beaudreau over to third, and a failed pickoff attempt allowed him to score as the Jets took a 3-1 lead to the bottom of the third. The Jets tacked on another run in the fourth, when
Alex Lator led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a groundout by
Jordan Ollenberger.
Newman padded its lead in the top of the seventh, with
Jarrod Flax leading off the inning with a bunt single and moving over to third on a
Tyler Bugner single.
Mitchell Beaudreau laced a triple up the right field line to score both runners and make it 6-1, then
Ricky Sanchez singled on the ensuing pitch to score Beaudreau and put the Jets ahead 7-1 going into the bottom of the last inning. Newman starter worked around a leadoff error and retired the final three batters to seal the victory.
Ricky Sanchez also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and
Alex Lator went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
John Branum settled down after the Aggies scored in the second and cruised to his fifth win of the year, scattering six hits and striking out six batters in the complete game victory.
Game 2: Newman 3, OPSU 0Game two was a complete pitcher's duel, with both teams threatening to score several times but being unable to cash in. Newman mustered just one hit through the first five innings despite absolutely crushing several balls into the outfield, but the wind held them up as fell things fell the Jets' way.
Cody Frederickson put forth a stellar outing, tossing 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball and striking out seven batters.
Brandon Roberts came on in relief of Frederickson with two out in the eighth, when the Aggies had runners at the corners. Roberts got the next batter to ground out to end the inning, and the game went into the ninth still 0-0. Newman threatened in the ninth but left
Tyler Bugner stranded at third, and Roberts worked out of a jam in the ninth inning to send the game to extras.
Jordan Ollenberger started the rally with two outs in the top of the tenth, working a 3-2 walk to breathe some life into the offense.
Garrett Thomas worked a walk to put men at first and second, and
Jarrod Flax delivered the clutch hit Newman had been missing, dropping a double into the left center gap to score both runners and give Newman some breathing room with a 2-0 lead.
Tyler Bugner punched a single to short center field to score Flax and make it 3-0, and
Brandon Roberts worked a 1-2-3 tenth inning to secure the 3-0 win and the doubleheader sweep.
Cody Frederickson got the no-decision in the game despite keeping the Aggie offense off the board, which meant that
Brandon Roberts picked up the win in relief, tossing 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball. Newman mustered only four hits in the game and had only two through the first eight innings, but came out on top 3-0 with some timely late hitting.
The doubleheader sweep of OPSU puts Newman at 21-24 on the year, but 14-12 in conference. The sweep today was vital for the Jets, as they still hold a one-game lead over Texas Permian Basin and Arkansas Fort Smith for the third spot in the conference. Newman will look to complete their first series sweep of the season tomorrow, with the third game of the series starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Zak Mickens will toe the rubber as Newman looks to further pad their lead in the standings going into their final conference series with Fort Smith next weekend.
