Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. - The Jets busted out the brooms on Saturday, with
Zak Mickens firing off 8 scoreless innings as Newman defeated OPSU 3-0 to sweep the series.
Ricky Sanchez went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and
Alex Lator went 3-for-3 with a walk as the Jets picked up their first series sweep of the season.
Both teams threatened early, with OPSU getting guys to second and third with two out in the bottom of the second, but Mickens got the next batter to whiff to end the inning and keep the game scoreless. Newman broke the tie in the top of the third, with
Jarrod Flax and
Tyler Bugner both reaching on hit by pitches to start off the inning. After
Mitchell Beaudreau sacrificed both men over,
Ricky Sanchez scorched a ball to right that was deep enough to allow Flax to tag up and score, giving Newman the 1-0 lead.
Mickens cruised through the next few innings, and Newman would give him some breathing room in the seventh with two more insurance runs. After
Garrett Thomas led off with an infield single and moved up to second on a sac bunt,
Tyler Bugner worked a full-count walk to put runners at first and second with one away.
Mitchell Beaudreau then bounced a single up the middle to score Thomas, with Bugner advancing to third on the throw home.
Ricky Sanchez lined a single into left field on the next pitch to score Bugner and make it 3-0, and the Jets would hold on to win by that score.
Zak Mickens worked around two leadoff baserunners in the seventh and sent the Aggies down in order in the eighth, but ran into trouble to start the bottom of the ninth. The leadoff batter singled through the left side, and the next batter worked a walk to put runners at first and second with nobody out.
Brandon Roberts came in and slammed the door though, with a groundout and a strikeout putting runners at second and third with the Aggies down to their final out. Roberts got the final batter to bounce a ball weakly to third, which
Garrett Thomas came in and barehanded to whip the ball to first just in time to nail the runner and secure the 3-0 victory.
Zak Mickens improved to 7-4 on the season with the win, tossing 8+ scoreless and striking out eight while walking three.
Brandon Roberts picked up his third save of the year in retiring all three batters he faced. It was an outstanding weekend for the Newman pitching staff, as
John Branum,
Cody Frederickson,
Zak Mickens, and
Brandon Roberts combined to limit the Aggies to just one run over the three games.
With the win, the Jets are now 22-24 on the year, and 15-12 in conference. Newman holds its own destiny going into the final week of the regular season, with a nonconference matchup with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday before hosting Arkansas Fort Smith for the final conference weekend. Newman still holds a one-game lead over UTPB and Fort Smith for the third seed in the conference tournament – the top four teams in the conference advance.
